SocEnt Weekend: Business Ideas That Can Make a Difference ...

Curt Woodward2/24/12

When they set out to start a?business, plenty of entrepreneurs hope to change some slice of the world by solving a?problem, making their customers happy, and giving people jobs along the way. And that?s plenty of work on its?own.

But some companies, says longtime mobile entrepreneur Michael ?Luni? Libes, see business as an opportunity to have a?broader effect on society?missions like helping the poor, protecting the environment, or supporting education.

It?s that second group of entrepreneurs that Libes and friends are trying to cultivate with SocEnt Weekend, a?three-day startup experiment in Seattle aimed at encouraging social entrepreneurship.

The event kicks off Friday evening at the Hub Seattle, a?co-working space in Pioneer Square aimed at people tackling social issues. Mayor Mike McGinn is expected to speak, and there are all-star mentors, prizes for the winners, and some entrepreneurial lessons during the?program.

SocEnt Weekend borrows heavily from the template of Startup Weekend, the Seattle-based crash-entrepreneurship festivals that have spread worldwide in just a?few years. (It?s officially just ?inspired by? Startup Weekend, which Startup Weekend CEO Marc Nager says is just?fine.)

Libes

Even though it?s focused on do-gooder ideas, SocEnt Weekend isn?t looking to start nonprofits. Libes, who left mobile-data startup Ground Truth after its merger with Boston?s Umber Systems, wants to see for-profit business ideas that can also make a?difference in?society.

Libes, who?s been serving as an entrepreneur-in-residence at the Bainbridge Graduate Institute and University of Washington, says organizers haven?t of anyone else trying a?hackathon-type approach for encouraging social enterprises.

Seattle seems like a?decent place to kick off such an effort. The city?s voters are reliably liberal, and even fiscal conservatives tend to lean to the left on many social issues (Libes himself notes that he?s a ?libertarian capitalist.?)

The Puget Sound region also has a?notable roster of businesses that have kept environmental protection, premium compensation for workers, and other greater-good causes close to their hearts.?A good poster child is Starbucks, the Seattle coffee titan that gives health benefits to baristas, has upped standards for coffee growers, and is aiming for fully recycled coffee cups in the next few?years.

?They create a?product that no one needs,? Libes says. ?But they do it in a?highly public, socially conscious manner ? Their impact on society is positive. As opposed to Boston?s poster child for coffee, which is Dunkin??Donuts.?

Libes contends that a?socially responsible halo effect is a?big reason that people want to do business with Starbucks, taste in coffee aside. And there are other examples, like Ben & Jerry?s ice cream, Patagonia and REI in outdoor sports gear, and even Craigslist, which has always put community commerce ahead of making tons of money for?itself.

For local flavor, I?d even throw in Dick?s Hamburgers?the family-owned company pays excellent wages for food service (almost $10 an hour to start) and offers free health insurance, subsidized dental coverage, college scholarships, paid volunteer time, and child-care stipends for part-time?employees.

?There?s a?growing number of companies, big, established, successful companies, that fall in this definition of for-profit social enterprise,? he says. And who knows?the next one of those big ideas could find its spark this?weekend.

February 23, 2012 admin seo

Business is centered on the important thing. If if you?re business seriously is not making money you then better often be making various adjustments or think about the possibility of moving away from business. The simple truth is that an online presence is one of billions connected with websites on the internet, so the effectiveness simple sites big profits marketing application is zero unless the best, carefully engineered marketing is which is used to promote the idea. With a great number of sites to contend with, the idea is always that anyone might eventually find your site is very false.

Instinctive well-known speaker and commentator Ashley Michael expressed, ?Now unquestionably, using your text-to-speech software programs are something i don?t advocate.? Most within the cheap software available on the market have terrible speakers, and these people make your podcast great ridiculous. However, earning via this start up company opportunity won?t as simple as others might think.

This includes writing well crafted articles with regards to a particular subject of the carrier?s products. The Self-Help Delusion :: Evan Brown

I think it?s time to get over this whole ?self help? thing. There is an entire industry based around telling us that they have the elusive secret to happiness, that if you just read this book, watch that video, do these exercises, or think this way you can become a better, fuller person. I?ve read a lot of stuff like this, and even though I appreciate good advice, I?ve come to almost resent the whole idea of ?self improvement.? I resent it because it tricked me into putting my energy towards trying to find something that I had all along.

You know those cheesy maxims that say you?re already perfect the way you are? It turns out they?re right. And if they?re right, that pretty much negates the whole business of helping you improve yourself. How can you improve on perfection? Thing is, you?ll never be satisfied if you?re bent on self-improvement. If you?re anything of a perfectionist, you?ll never be good enough. How can that be healthy? You?re not a work in progress. You?re a human being living a life in progress. You don?t have to work toward being a complete person, hoping you can achieve that fullness someday. You have it now. You just have to make the decision to recognize that.

Of course, if you?re already perfect then how can you explain all those bad habits you?d like to be rid of? Well, just because you?re perfect doesn?t mean you can never?or should never?change. Things are always changing. That?s how life is. And it?s in this seeming contradiction, that you?re already perfect but you should embrace change in yourself, that we can find the key distinction that shatters the fragile framework of ?self-help.?

I think it?s as simple as changing one key word: Evolve, don?t improve.

That makes the most sense to me, but how exactly does one do this? How can we strive for our own evolution without falling into the many traps of seeking self-improvement? In my experience (and I?m only an expert on my own life, but aren?t we all), there are a few good ways to hop on the evolution train:

1. Get to know who you really are. This sounds simple, but it may take a lot of soul-searching and genuine effort. I only feel like I actually achieved this within the last year or two of my life. When you have a firm grasp on who you are, you will have a much better idea of what you really want. And when you know what you want, whatever that may be, you have the framework for your entire life. I wish I had some insightful thing to say about how to figure out who you are, but it?s probably different for everyone. It took me years of whittling away the things that I was not in order to find who I am. It may very well be a much easier task for someone who really has their shit together.

2. Make a point to live in the now. Also not always the easiest thing to do, but incredibly important nonetheless. Don?t spend your time regretting the past or worrying too much about the future. Now is all we have, so live in it, be grateful and appreciative that it exists. Your purpose in life has nothing to do with what you were or what you will be. They?re just figments of your imagination in the now.

3. Make the decision. Make the decision to forgive yourself for your shortcomings. Make the decision to learn from your mistakes. Make the decision to do what you love to do. Make the decision to be grateful for what you have. Make the decision to be happy. Sound simple? It actually is. Not always easy, to be clear? But simple.

When you do these three things, you have control over your life. Not complete control over everything that happens, which is obviously impossible. But you control your destiny. You control your outlook on life. You understand how you feel about things, you control how you react to situations. And you can be happy right here, right now, just as you are, with no need for improvement.

One of my favorite TED talks is by?Nic Marks. He set out to find the true measurement of happiness and came up with five things that generally make people feel fulfilled: connect, stay active, keep learning, take notice, and give. I think this is an superbly simple summary of how little it actually takes for a person to be happy, and it didn?t fill a self-help book. It doesn?t even fill a paragraph. It?s five simple things to think about every day without beating yourself up over the constant need to be ?better.? There?s no need to plan or construct a grand scheme that you will someday have the self-discipline to carry out.

No one can be happy all day every day. So do what you can to learn about yourself and strive for fulfillment over constant happiness. Evolve and grow, don?t improve. Save the money you would have spent on self-help books and buy yourself a nice dinner. Or buy me dinner. I?m free tonight.

Car computer books ahead to avoid red lights

Computers can reserve your plane ticket, your hotel room and your restaurant table. Why not your place at an intersection?

The concept is simple: a computer in a car calls ahead to the nearest intersection it is headed toward, and says it will arrive at a given time. The intersection checks to see if anyone else is arriving then, and if the slot is open, it tells the car to proceed. If it isn't, it tells the car that and the car is responsible for slowing down or stopping.

That's the idea Peter Stone, an associate professor of computer science at the University of Texas at Austin, is presenting at the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

BLOG: Dish Soap Helps Slide New Bridge Into Place

Rather than trying to keep track of all the cars on the road, all the intersection's computer does is say whether there is a space for the next vehicle, given a list of time slots.

"It's a bit like reserving at a hotel room," Stone said. "When you call a hotel and say you are arriving Friday, they check to see if there is a room. They don't call up everyone else at the hotel and ask them to change their travel plans."

If there is no room, the traveler changes the arrival date or finds another hotel. The intersection would work in a similar fashion.

Cars are becoming more sophisticated, and there is already a lot of work being done networking cars (including at least one concept model from Ford ). Integrating them with the traffic signals isn't a large step, and that could boost the efficiency of traffic, as well as safety.

The Department of Transportation reported that in 2009 there were 5.5 million car crashes and 2.2 million were at either an intersection or "intersection related." Of those accidents, 699,000 resulted in injuries, and 6,770 resulted in deaths.

BLOG: Electric Cars a Heath Hazard in China

Part of the reason intersections are dangerous ? in some cases more so than highways ? is because the vehicles are going in different directions, so sideswipes are more common. When cars collide, a thin door is much less protection than an engine block. But the other major factor is human behavior.

Green lights are designed to operate in waves that allow cars traveling at a set speed to travel freely for some distance, but few ever keep to that speed ? one person is going faster and another slower, and it isn't long before the smooth flow of traffic is a mess.

Stone wanted to solve some of that and keep the computing complexity to a minimum. One could, Stone said, link the intersections as well, so that along certain routes they could coordinate traffic flow. (If such an intersection's computer were to fail it would be no different than when traffic lights go out).

Others in the field are working on similar problems. Denis Gillet, associate professor of information systems at Switzerland's Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, noted that vehicles could do a certain amount of "planning ahead" for their trajectories, by exchanging information with each other.

Gillet said the idea in any of these systems is to get vehicles to slow down, but not stop, because slowing and stopping is not very energy-efficient.

BLOG: Newspapers to Fuel Cars

Philip Tanoff, who recently retired as director of the Center for Advanced Transportation Technology at the University of Maryland, is skeptical that such a system could work with only a few cars equipped to signal the traffic intersection.

"It seems that it would work only under optimal conditions," he said. Though the onus of adjusting speeds and arrival times (or stopping) is on the cars, the question, he says, is whether they could account for many other factors on the road ? pedestrian traffic, for instance, crossing at a crosswalk.

Stone said his technology can work with even just a few vehicles linked to the intersections, since the car can still take into account what the (unconnected) ones around it are doing.

"The benefits are less when there are human drivers," he said. "But it is still safer."

Stone is also researching methods of dynamically changing the number of lanes in each direction on major roads to respond to traffic flows.

Altering the lanes is familiar to anyone who has driven into New Your City's Lincoln Tunnel, or seen the huge machines moving barriers on New York's Tappan Zee Bridge. In this case, a combination of lane changes and managing traffic flows at the intersections could mean better traffic flows through a city.

Dress in Blue Day raises colon cancer awareness | LebanonRoad ...

The 4th Annual National Dress In Blue Day event will be held in communities and offices nationwide on Friday, March 2nd as part of Colon Cancer Awareness Month. Just as red has come to symbolize AIDS and pink represents breast cancer, blue now signifies the fight against Colon Cancer.

Dress in Blue Day encourages individuals, businesses and community groups to wear blue and talk to each other about the importance of colon cancer screenings.? In addition to asking people to Dress in Blue, Lebanon Endoscopy Center located on 100 Physicians Way, Suite 340, will host an open house to encourage the community to get involved.? The open house will provide free educational materials, wristbands, Blue Star buttons, refreshments, $25 ?Gas Card? and Awareness T-Shirt giveaways.

There will also be nurse guided facility tours and physicians on hand to answer your most difficult questions.? The event will be held on Dress in Blue Day, Friday, March 2nd from 5pm to 6:30pm. ?This is our way of getting the Lebanon community together to talk about a topic which can be difficult to discuss.? Knowing the facts about colon cancer and preventative screening saves lives and that is what we hope to do with this event?, said Teresa Hall, Administrator of Lebanon Endoscopy Center.

The purpose of Dress in Blue Day is to promote awareness about colorectal cancer and encourage people to get screened.? Colorectal cancer is the #2 cause of death in the U.S. and this year will kill as many people as breast cancer and AIDS combined.? The cancer often has no symptoms at all until it?s at an advanced stage, but is 90% preventable when detected early.? You can reduce your risk through regular screening.

The idea for Dress in Blue Day originated in 2006 when a CCA volunteer and co-founder of Colon S.T.A.R.S. of Seattle wanted to find an effective way to honor a friend who had recently passed away from colon cancer and recognize others who had lost their fight against colorectal cancer.? In 2009, the Colon Cancer Alliance (CCA), excited by the idea, worked with the group to bring national recognition to the Dress in Blue Day.

The CCA is the nation?s leading colorectal cancer organization focused on meeting individual patient and caregiver needs by connecting each of those diagnosed with a support network through its Online Colorectal Cancer Community, Buddy Program, and Toll Free help line.? The CCA is working to get people talking about their colon?s health and to promote early screenings through education and fun events such as regional seminars, open houses, and the annual Dress in Blue Day.

10 unique reasons to go to spring training

No matter how bad your team is, you'll enjoy the party

Image: Van MilPhoto courtesy of Joe Connor

Among the larger-than-life sites?you might run into at spring training is Loek Van Mil, a 7-foot-1 pitcher in the Angels organization.

OPINION

By Joe Connor

NBCSports.com contributor

updated 1:02 a.m. ET Feb. 20, 2012

Another baseball season is upon us. And what makes a new season truly great? It's a reason to party. That?s right, party.

That includes you, Houston Astros fans. In your 50th and last season in the National League, throw back some ?Stros and party now before you?re 1-7 by tax day and en route to your second straight 100-plus loss season. And you too, Mets fans. Casey Stengel would be so proud of how you?ll be celebrating a half century as second fiddle to the Yankees. But no one should party harder than A?s fans, some 40 years removed from their World Series three-peat.

Luckily, there is no better place to party than spring training. Here are the top 10 reasons why.

1. Anniversary Parties!
Long live the 1990s, baby, because the Blue Jays, Orioles and Pirates mark some important anniversaries to start 2012 ? they just aren?t very good ones. It?s been 15 seasons since the Orioles made the playoffs and 15 years since the Blue Jays won their first of two consecutive World Series titles. But that?s nothing: it?s now been 20 ? yep, 20 years ? since the Pirates made the postseason. If this reminder makes Bucs fans want to hurl foreign objects, 2011 marked 30 years of postseason futility for the Nationals/Expos (and that?s if you want to count their 1981 appearance in that strike-shortened season as a playoff spot).

2. Spanning the Globe Party!
With homage to the late Jim McKay, MLB continues to span the globe, with 43 different countries or territories represented this spring. What gives? Turns out these are some mighty big (mostly pitchers) from you-mean-they-really-play-baseball-there-places? According to MLB International, among those sizing the 6-foot-4-inch department, lefty prospects Chris Reed from England (Angels), Alfredo Belizaire (Cubs) from Haiti and Steven Evarts (Yankees) from Italy; right-handers Etevenson Encarnacion (Indians) from Anguilla, Jorge Zavala (Braves) from Honduras and Aliaksei Lukashevich (Pirates) from Belarus; and outfielder Thomas De Wolf (Mets) from Belgium.

One-inch higher and you find 6-foot-5-inch Twins prospects, Hein Robb of South Africa and righty Markus Solbach from Germany, plus Phillies youngsters, right-handers Marek Minarik from the Czech Republic and Aaron Altherr from Germany. The Orioles are in on the act too with 6-foot-5 New Zealand first baseman Pita Rona. A few years ago, the Pirates brought us Rinku Singh ? from India ? and many laughed. But Singh is still pitching in the minors and Alex Liddi of the Mariners became the first-Italian born player to make MLB in decades when he did so last season. So no more laughing ? admire. Incidentally, the Chinese National Team will train at the Mariners complex from March 22 until the end of camp, playing minor league spring training games.

3. Tallest Player Party!
Speaking of tall foreigners, pitcher Loek Van Mil (pictured, with the author) will be back in Angels minor league camp this spring. At 7-foot-1, the right-hander from the Netherlands is the tallest player signed to an MLB organization. And with a birth certificate name of Ludovicus Jacobus Maria Van Mil, the equipment room guy is glad Jarrod Saltalamaccia remains the longest name in the game.

4. New Ballpark Party!
The Chowdaheads from New England not only have a new manager in Bobby Valentine, they also have a shiny, brand spanking spring training crib. JetBlue Park will have a capacity of more than 10,000 and it opens to Red Sox Nation in Fort Myers on March 3 as the Bobby V era begins.

5. Throwback Ballpark Party!
Old school Grapefruit League fans yawning for a return to yesteryear, we feel your pain. Six different MLB teams will play at least one game at historic Al Lang Field in St. Petersburg this spring, a ballpark built in the 1940s that hasn?t hosted a full-time spring training tenant since the hometown Rays left after the 2008 Grapefruit League campaign (and yet the team wonders why they can?t sell out a playoff game).

In the past, the charming downtown waterfront ballpark has also hosted the likes of the Yankees, Mets, Cardinals and Orioles for spring training. The Tigers kick off the party March 8 when they play the Dutch National team at 1:05 p.m.

6. Split-Squad Pajama Parties!
Since the Reds relocated to Arizona for spring training in 2010, which made for an odd number of teams in both the Cactus and Grapefruit Leagues, MLB has gotten a major case of split-squad-itis. Between March 3 and April 2, there will be at least one split-squad game every day except March 19 and March 21. MLB will celebrate St. Patrick?s Day, March 17, while also celebrating Split-Squad Disease Day. You certainly won?t run out of luck finding a game on St. Paddy?s Day because there are 20 on the docket. If your favorite star player is on the road and they?re a split-squad, you might want to save your autograph program for him to sign for the next home game.

7. I?m Sick-of-You-Already Parties!
Even before the calendar strikes April, some teams will be downright sick of each other ? and it won?t end soon thereafter either. The Phillies-Pirates will play each four times. So do the Diamondbacks and Rockies ? before they face each other 18 times during the regular season.

The Indians and Reds will also tussle six times during the spring. But that?s nothing. The Cardinals and Marlins will face each six times over four weeks in March alone ? and that?s before they even meet at Marlins Ballpark for the regular season home opener. If Carlos Zambrano and Ozzie Guillen blow an early gasket, you?ll know it?s because they?ve just seen way too many redbirds.

8. 2012 Division Preview Parties!
American League East Contenders (Grapefruit League): Red Sox-Yankees (March 13, March 22); Red Sox-Rays (March 10, 18, 27, 31); Yankees-Rays (March 7, March 21); Red Sox-Blue Jays (March 7, 20, 29); Yankees-Blue Jays (March 8, 14 and March 27); Blue Jays-Rays (March 16, March 23).

American League Central Contenders (mostly Cactus League): Indians-White Sox (March 15-March 27); Indians-Royals (March 6, March 18); White Sox-Royals (March 22, March 30). The Tigers and Twins play once in the Grapefruit circuit: March 21.

American League West Contenders (Cactus League): The Angels and Rangers play a home-and-home series, March 24-25.

National League East Contenders (Grapefruit League): Phillies-Braves (March 15 and April 1); Braves-Nationals (March 6, March 14, March 21, March 29); Nationals-Marlins (March 9, March 17, March 27, March 30); Marlins-Braves (March 13, March 22).

National League Central Contenders (Cactus League): Reds-Brewers (March 29).

National League West Contenders (Cactus League): Dodgers-Giants (March 6, March 17, March 28); Dodgers-Diamondbacks (March 31-April 1); Dodgers-Rockies (March 13, March 17); Giants-Diamondbacks (March 3-4, March 20); Giants-Rockies (March 7, March 22, March 24); Diamondbacks-Rockies (March 3, March 5, March 14, March 27).

Potential League Championship Series Postseason Preview Parties: Yankees-Tigers (March 24-25).

Potential World Series Preview Parties! Tigers-Phillies (March 9, March 11, March 19, March 25); Tigers-Braves (March 3-4, March 7, March 20, March 31); Tigers-Cardinals (March 17 and March 28); Tigers-Marlins (March 6, March 26); Yankees-Braves (March 9-10, March 28); Yankees-Phillies (March 3-5, March 11, March 23, March 30); Red Sox-Phillies (March 24, March 26); Reds-Angels (March 11, March 15); Reds-Rangers (March 22, March 26).

9. Make Ernie Banks Proud Party!
Flexible and want to make the most of your spring training vacation? Visit March 26-30 in Florida or March 28-31 in Arizona ? and make Ernie Banks proud. Mr. Cubs always said ?Let?s play two!? You? ?Let?s catch two!? As in two Spring Training games in one day. There's at least one night game each day to complement a slew of day tilts so you could see two games in one day, plus, the starting nine often go seven+ innings come late March with the regular season approaching.

FLORIDA DOUBLE-DIPPING

You?ve got 18 separate days in Grapefruitville to catch a day game, followed by a night game. But with most of the starters playing longer come the last week of March, the 26-30 is the best week to tell your boss to shove it and make yourself dizzy watching 10 games in five days. And here?s your schedule, kiddo:

March 26: Red Sox at Phillies, 1:05 p.m. (2012 World Series Preview?); Orioles at Pirates, 7:05 p.m. (Bust out your most colorful 1979 Disco outfit)

March 27: Twins at Orioles or Pirates at Phillies 1:05 p.m. (Your best disco hangover choices); Blue Jays at Yankees, 7:05 p.m. (Have?s versus Have Not?s Party!)

March 28: Orioles at Blue Jays, 1:05 p.m. (The 15-Year Occupy Anti-Playoff Anniversary Party!); Pirates at Rays, 7:05 p.m. (Our Owners Claim We?re Broke and Have No Money to Spend Party!)

March 29: Cardinals at Marlins or Blue Jays at Red Sox, 1:05 p.m.; Nationals at Tigers, 6:05 p.m. or Orioles at Yankees, 7:05 p.m.

March 30: Mets at Cardinals, 1:05 p.m. or Red Sox at Twins, 1:05 p.m.; Marlins at Nationals, 6:05 p.m. or Phillies at Yankees, 7:05 p.m.

ARIZONA DOUBLE-DIPPING

For you Cactus League crazies, there are 15 separate days to double-dip with March 28-31 offering four consecutive days of utter day-night madness. Tips appreciated:

March 28: Angels at Reds (2012 World Series preview?) or Dodgers at Giants, 1:05 p.m.; Rangers at Royals, 6:05 p.m.

March 29: Reds at Brewers, 1:05 p.m. (NL Central Division Battle Preview); Giants at Rangers, 6:05 p.m. (Re-Match of the 2010 World Series)

10. Subway Series Party, Sunshine State Style!
For the first time since the early 1990s, the Yankees and Mets will battle for Grapefruit League bragging rights when the two New York clubs play a home-and-home series, March 3-4. The last time the two teams met in spring training was in 1993 way back when the Bronx Bombers trained in Fort Lauderdale and closer to the Mets' long-time Florida home in Port St. Lucie.

If the Yankees win Grapefruit League bragging rights, they get to give back Pedro Feliciano?s damaged arm to the Mets; if the Mets win, it will literally be the highlight of their 2012 season (Sorry Mets fans, but you know it?s true). If it?s a tie, well then just have a merry spring training and party likes it?s 1969.

Detecting Fecal k-ras and p-53 Mutation in Patients with Colorectal ...

[Abstract]

Background and aims: Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains the second leading cause of malignant mortality in industrialized countries, accounding for more than 10% of all cancer deaths. During the development of our country?s economy and gradually western diet structure, mortality of colorectal cancer continue increases annually, and reach to the fouth in malignant disease in population, to the second in men. It would take about 10 years for normal colonic epithelium to become adnomas and then become carcinomas, so it provide enough time to screen and diagnose. However, because its asymptomatic in early stage and the performance limitations and low compliance rates with current screening tools, screening efforts had little impact on its mortality and morbidity. Colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy are highly specific and sensitive tests for neoplasia, but they are invasive, and limited by patient compliance and physician availability. Also, they have risk for bleeding and perforation. Annual fecal occult blood test (FOBT) is a noninvasive and simple examination that has been shown to reduce the incidence , mortality and morbidity of CRC. But many cancers and most premalignant adenomas do not bleeding and are missed. Furthermore , high false-positive rates as a result of frequene and trivial sources of occult bleeding lead to unnecessary colonoscopies, which drive up programmatic costs. More optimal screening tools are needed that would exhibit the combined features of high sensitivity and specificity for early stage cancers, broad acceptability by general population, affordability and safety .

Mexican church draws fire for voting guidelines

(AP)? MEXICO CITY ? Mexico's Roman Catholic Church is drawing fire for releasing a set of "guidelines" on how the faithful should vote ahead of the July 1 presidential elections.

All religious groups are banned by law in Mexico from engaging in partisan politics, or supporting or opposing any candidate or party.

The guidelines published Tuesday by the Archdiocese of Mexico appear to closely skirt the restriction.

They do not mention any party, saying only that Catholics cannot "choose as a political option those who support or promote false rights or liberties that attack the teachings contained in the Holy Scriptures, tradition and doctrine of the Church."

They also Catholics should pay attention to candidates' commitment to the right to life.

Obama's proposed tax hikes at odds with GOP rivals (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama proposed tax increases on wealthy individuals and some corporations Monday, setting the stage for an ideological battle that won't be resolved until after the November election ? if then.

Obama's proposed tax hikes put him at odds with the Republican presidential hopefuls. They have all called for tax packages that would lower taxes but possibly add to the federal deficit.

Obama's 2013 budget proposal mixes tax cuts designed to improve the economy with long-term tax increases aimed at reducing the federal budget deficit.

The plan calls for a tax reform package that would increase revenue by $1.5 trillion over the next decade. Obama did not offer a detailed plan for tax reform. Instead, he proposed a series of changes to the current tax system and several principles for what comprehensive tax reform would look like.

Administration officials said Monday that Obama would release a framework for corporate tax reform by the end of the month. The top corporate income tax rate of 35 percent is among the highest in the industrialized world. But the system is filled with so many deductions, credits and exemptions that many corporations pay taxes at a much lower rate.

Obama says he wants to simplify the tax code, lowering marginal tax rates while eliminating or reducing tax breaks enjoyed by wealthy individuals and U.S.-based multinational corporations.

Obama's plan would allow Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy to expire at the end of the year, and would impose a new rule that people making more than $1 million a year pay at least 30 percent of their income in taxes. The "Buffett" rule, named after billionaire investor Warren Buffett, would replace the alternative minimum tax, which was originally designed to ensure that wealthy families pay at least some tax.

Obama did not detail how the Buffett rule would work. He said it should be a guiding principle for comprehensive tax reform.

"I believe that in our country, everyone must shoulder their fair share ? especially those who have benefited the most from our economy," Obama said in his budget message. "In the United States of America, a teacher, a nurse, or a construction worker who earns $50,000 a year should not pay taxes at a higher rate than somebody making $50 million. That is wrong."

Obama's tax proposals have no chance of passing a divided Congress in which most Republicans oppose all tax increases. Obama has included many of them in previous budget proposals, only to have them ignored by Congress.

Instead, Congress appears headed for another year-end showdown over whether to extend tax cuts first enacted under former President George W. Bush.

"The president offered a partisan, election-year budget that ratchets up spending while ignoring the biggest drivers of our debt and calls for massive tax increases on hardworking families and small businesses," said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va.

The tax cuts, which expire at the end of the year, affect taxpayers at every income level. Obama wants to extend them for individuals making less than $200,000 a year and married couples making less than $250,000. He wants to let the tax cuts expire for those who make more.

Obama's plan would increase the taxes on qualified dividends for the wealthiest investors. The top tax rate on qualified dividends is currently 15 percent. For the wealthiest investors, Obama would tax them at the same rate as ordinary income, with a top rate of 39.6 percent.

Obama's rivals, including former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, have proposed tax plans that independent experts say would result in lower taxes for corporations and the wealthy.

Romney's tax plan would make permanent all of the Bush-era tax cuts, including those for the wealthy. Romney's plan, however, would reduce revenue by $180 billion in 2015, adding to the federal budget deficit, according to an analysis by the Tax Policy Center, a Washington think tank.

Romney's campaign disputes the estimate, saying tax cuts in the plan would help improve the economy, leading to more revenue.

Among Obama's tax proposals:

? Make permanent the American Opportunity Tax Credit, which provides students with up to $2,500 a year for college expenses, saving taxpayers $137 billion over the next decade.

? Enhance and make permanent the research and experimentation tax credit, saving businesses $109 billion over the next decade.

? Extend through 2012 a provision that allows businesses to more quickly write off the cost of new equipment such as computers, saving them $31 billion over the next decade.

? Provide a tax credit for employers that increase their payrolls in 2012. Employers could get a tax credit equal to 10 percent of the increase in wages subject to Social Security taxes. The tax credit would save businesses $18 billion.

? Raise $143 billion over the next decade by increasing estate and gift taxes, and changing the way some trusts are taxed.

? Increase taxes on U.S.-based multinational corporations by $148 billion over the next decade, in part by changing the way foreign tax credits are calculated and restricting the ability to defer taxes on foreign profits by limiting deductions for interest expenses.

? Raise $61 billion over the next decade by imposing a fee on financial institutions with more than $50 billion in assets. The fee, which is designed to recover the costs of the Wall Street bailout, would be based on the covered liabilities of a financial firm.

? Raise $30 billion over the next decade by eliminating tax breaks for oil, gas and coal companies.

? Raise $87 billion over the next decade by requiring businesses to change the way they value their inventory for tax purposes.

Satellite Phones Today

The earth has come a long way since the early days of the ?Sputnik?! Satellite methods are now delivering both voice and data communication regarding parts of the globe where there is little or absolutely no land as well as cell phone provision satellite phone. Using satellite television telephones help you to keep in contact when you find yourself in the air as well as out on the ocean. They also allow us to track along with remain in connection with adventurers whom test the limits involving endurance along with skill. We are able to follow their routes, speak with them along with receive images and movies from wherever they may be so we can be immediately ready to help them to when things don?t go quite according to the program.

How does this work and then? The satellite television phone sends a signal, via an antenna to a orbiting satellite television in a community of spoutnik then to a terrain station and a standard land based mobile phone network. Seems good right? However, the fishing line of sight signal course between the satellite television telephone along with satellite must not be obstructed. Perhaps bad climate can sometimes be a challenge. In general, wedding party is much better out-of-doors but if you are on a boat on the ocean or in an aircraft in the air and then an external aerial might be essential.

Right now there are usually five main satellite voice service providers. Global Star along with Iridium are still the biggest. They offer a multitude of options for both businesses and the average person all the time. Iridium is perhaps the best known of all of them for a variety of reasons. The corporation uses a community of 66 operational low-earth-orbit spoutnik and they have an additional 13 give up satellites way too. The spoutnik are in orbits approximately 485 kilometers above the top of the Earth.

They supply to an considerable variety of marketplaces which include construction, mining, authorities, leisure along with maritime. Additionally, they provide equipment to the army and to recovery and catastrophe relief organisations. Companies tend to sell their services via a collection of support partners, value-added resellers and producers.

Wherever there is a need for dependable, go-anywhere communications you will notice satellite mobile phones being used. The particular military make extensive usage of them, just like airlines along with shipping. They could also be very helpful in catastrophe areas where presently there it?s probable that land based marketing and sales communications have been upset by the catastrophe or never ever existed to start with. Satellite mobile phones can be tracked too. This could come in handy while guiding planes into remote areas speedily.

Trucks that will travel towards the Alaskan pipeline are being fitted along with satellite mobile phones in a bet to battle terrorism satellite phones. If a vehicle gets hijacked then the regulators are alerted instantly while using satellite community. Using the same satellite television phone, the hijacked vehicle can be differently abled before the enemy has a opportunity to use it being a weapon.

As being a method of connection satellite phones remain an extremely expensive selection. It is higher priced than nearly all cell phone calls. Since the technology improves along with becomes more widely used, the prices should start to drop. At the moment Iridium claim that the cost of a satellite television phone call is comparable to the cost of an intercontinental roaming call. To improve general public perception and perhaps build the consumer market a is account raising inside Washington state to provide satellite television phones along with airtime free of charge for you to US Country wide Guard military serving inside Iraq.

American Men Hunger for Restaurant Gift Cards This Valentine?s Day

February 10, 2012
Contact: Annika Stensson (202) 973-3677, Anna Brown (646) 428-0609

(Washington, D.C.) While dining out remains a popular choice for Americans to celebrate Valentine?s Day, new National Restaurant Association research shows that nearly one-third would also like to receive a restaurant gift card on February 14. However, men show a much stronger preference for restaurant gift cards as a Valentine?s Day gift than women do at nearly half.

?Restaurant gift cards are popular gifts at any occasion, but we found that they are an especially good choice as a gift option for adult males this Valentine?s Day,? said Hudson Riehle, senior vice president of the Research and Knowledge Group for the National Restaurant Association. ?Celebrating the occasion with a special meal will be on the menu for one-quarter of Americans this February 14, but those who opt to give restaurant gift cards as gifts will, in a sense, extend the holiday to have a special meal another day.?

Given a list of six Valentine?s Day gift options and asked which one they would most like to receive as a Valentine?s Day gift, 31 percent of adults favored restaurant gift cards, followed by jewelry, clothing/apparel, flowers, chocolate and perfume/cologne. When broken down by gender, 46 percent of men favored restaurant gift cards over clothing/apparel at 16 percent, and chocolate at 12 percent. Women indicated that their preferred gifts are jewelry (37 percent) and flowers (23 percent), with restaurant gift cards coming in third at 13 percent.

The survey also showed that nearly half of American adults don?t plan to celebrate Valentine?s Day at all, or celebrate with things other than a special meal. One-quarter will celebrate Valentine?s Day by dining in a restaurant. In addition, one-quarter plans to celebrate the occasion at home or someone else?s home, and of those, 15 percent plan to order restaurant takeout or delivery.

Among those who plan to dine out on February 14, younger adults are slightly more likely to do so, as are individuals in two-person households compared with those in single-person households and households with three or members.

The National Restaurant Association surveyed 1,007 American adults on February 2-5 about their dining plans for Valentine?s Day. Previous research by the Association shows that Valentine?s Day is the second most popular holiday to dine out, after Mother?s Day.
