Rumor: Two iPads to be unveiled in January (Digital Trends)

Apple rumors are a dime a dozen, but here?s the latest. DigiTimes, a site known for many true and false rumors, reports that Apple will unveil two new versions of the iPad at iWorld/Macworld on Jan. 26, 2012. The new models will both have 9.7-inch screens like the current iPad, but at least one of them will have a QXGA screen (1536?2048 pixel resolution). A previous DigiTimes rumor, pointed toward a model with a 7.85-inch screen, but DigiTimes now says that is not the case. One model may have an 8MP rear camera while the other may have a 5MP camera. Oh, and at least one of the units will have a larger 14,000mAh battery (bigger than any tablet we can recall off hand).?

It does seem odd that Apple would release two iPad models that are the same except for some minor camera, screen, and battery improvements, but stranger things have happened. Odder is the timing of the unveiling. The first iPad was unveiled in April 2010, and the second was shown in March 2011, so a January reveal could be feasible, but Apple has not participated in Macworld for three years now, instead opting to hold its own events.

The presence of a high resolution screen on the next iPad has been floating around since the iPad 2 launched. It was originally rumored that the device would be unveiled around Sept. 2011. Another recent rumor pins the release date for the tablet Feb. 24, 2012, the birthday of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.?

PFT: Texans hope Johnson will play Sunday

New York Giants v New York JetsGetty Images

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has taken a lot of criticism from fans and the media. But he says he has no doubt that within the locker room, he has unconditional support.

Asked at his press conference today if he is confident that everyone in the locker room supports him, Sanchez answered, ?Absolutely, no question.?

Sanchez offered a similar answer when asked if he thinks he has improved during his three-year NFL career.

?No question, absolutely,? Sanchez said. ?Whether it?s defensive recognition or clock management and stuff like that, understanding the offense and the system, I?m light years ahead, so it?s been a great run so far and we?re not done yet. Hopefully, we?ll get a win and see what happens.?

But watching Sanchez, it?s hard to see how he has really improved in terms of his defensive recognition and clock management. He still makes too many mental mistakes, and he wastes timeouts too often to claim he has improved at clock management.

Ball security is also a huge problem for Sanchez, who fumbled 10 times in his rookie year, nine times last year and has fumbled 10 times this year. Those ball security problems were largely overlooked in his first two seasons because the Jets recovered seven of his 10 fumbles his rookie year and eight of his nine fumbles his second year. But this year the Jets have only recovered two of Sanchez?s 10 fumbles, and the problem of a quarterback who puts the ball on the ground too much has become more apparent.

Ultimately, Sanchez probably got too much credit when the Jets got to back-to-back AFC Championship Games in his first two years, and now he?s probably getting too much blame for the Jets likely missing the playoffs.

?We went to the AFC Championship two years in a row, so there is only one more step to make really, win that game and then go win the Super Bowl,? Sanchez said. ?With those expectations, that?s fine. When things don?t go right, people are going to immediately question me.?

No one said playing quarterback for the New York Jets would be easy.

Krispy Kreme for Android: The only app you'll ever need (Mmmmmmm ... Doughnuts)

Krispy Kreme

There are two kinds of people in this world -- those who love Krispy Kreme doughnuts, and those who are wrong. For those in the former group, there's now a "Hot Light" app for Android. Using sophisticated doughnut technology, it triangulates your position relative to nearby Krispy Kreme eateries and then notifies you whether the "Hot Now" sign is on -- and it'll alert when you the switch is thrown.

It is simultaneously the most happy (for when that sweet, sweet notification comes in) and sad (light no blinky) Android app we've ever used.

We've got download links after the break.

Why do GOP members need oath to lobbyist?

I am amazed that Congress takes time away from vital fundraising to pursue baseball players.

After countless dollars and eight years, Barry Bonds is given a 30-day house arrest and a $4,000 fine. After the extensive hearings, this is the best they got?

Another example of congressional waste is Congress fighting for the old light bulbs instead of the fluorescent bulbs. Way to go, guys. You certainly don't waste time on real budget and spending reform because that would take cooperation, and it is important for Republicans to prevent President Barack Obama's re-election, no matter what it costs the nation.

I do have one question for Republican congressmen: Didn't you take an oath to defend America from enemies, foreign and domestic, and to uphold the Constitution? Why do you need an oath to a lobbyist, Grover Norquist, when you already took a pretty good oath?

I now understand why George Washington was so against party and faction. He understood that the Congress would serve narrow interests and not the nation.

Tough choice looms on 9/11 health lawsuits (AP)

NEW YORK ? More than 1,600 people who filed lawsuits claiming that their health was ruined by dust and smoke from the collapsed World Trade Center must decide by Jan. 2 whether to keep fighting in court, or drop the litigation and apply for benefits from a government compensation fund.

For some, the choice is fraught with risk.

Federal lawmakers set aside $2.76 billion last winter for people who developed illnesses after spending time in the ash-choked disaster zone.

But to be considered for a share of the aid, all potential applicants must dismiss any pending lawsuits by the deadline and give up their right to sue forever over 9/11 health problems. Anyone with a lawsuit still pending on Jan. 3 is barred from the program for life.

The government program is attractive because it spares the sick from having to prove that their illness is related to 9/11, and that someone other than the terrorists put them in harm's way. But applicants won't know for months, or even years, how much money they might eventually receive from the program. That means some people may give up their lawsuits and find out later that they only qualify for a modest payment.

Others face a deeper problem. People exposed to trade center dust have blamed it for hundreds of illnesses, but currently the fund only covers a limited number of ailments, including asthma, scarred lungs and other respiratory system problems. That list does not currently include any type of cancer, which scientists have yet to link to trade center toxins.

But the very possibility that cancer could, someday, be covered has led some plaintiffs to drop their lawsuits anyway.

"In a sense, I've weighed my options and rolled the dice believing that the country I helped is not going to let me down," said former New York City police detective John Walcott, who retired after being diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia in 2003.

He decided a few days before Christmas to drop his case, saying he had come to believe he would never get anything out of the legal system.

"The court system was set up for attorneys to make a lot of money," he said. He added that at age 47, he is tired of a court fight that had no end in sight. "I'm done with 9/11. I can't go forward with my life and family and live in peace with this hanging over me."

The special master overseeing the compensation fund, Sheila Birnbaum, acknowledged that the deadline would put some people in a tight spot, especially if they have an illness that isn't currently covered by the fund.

"That is one of the dilemmas," she said.

Birnbaum noted, though, that the law gives her no wiggle room. Anyone who has a lawsuit active on Jan. 3 will be disqualified from consideration, she said, even if their illness is later deemed to be covered.

"It's a hard decision that they have to make," she said.

The lengthy application process for the fund began in October, and Birnbaum said she expected thousands to apply. She could not say how many might do so by the time the fund closes years from now.

Lawyers who represent people with pending cases said they have been going over the pros and cons with their clients for several months, to see which option might suit them better.

"It's a complicated analysis," said attorney Gregory Cannata, whose firm represents about 100 people, including laborers brought in to repair damaged buildings and cleaners who swept tons of dust from office suites.

Cannata said that for the most part, his clients have decided to stick with their lawsuits, in part because of the possibility of a larger payout than they might receive under the government program.

Police officers, firefighters and city contractors who cleared away the 9/11 rubble make up only a small slice of the people facing the dilemma. Most of the more than 5,000 city workers who filed lawsuits claiming that the city had failed to protect them from the dust settled their cases in 2010, before the compensation fund was created.

Walcott was one of a few who rejected the deal, worth more than $700 million. Under the law, people who settled previously will be allowed to apply for government benefits. Any award they receive will be reduced by whatever they got from the legal settlement.

The tough decisions won't end Jan. 2.

In addition to people with legal claims already pending, thousands more New Yorkers have become ill because of exposure to the dust. They will have to decide in the coming years whether to sue someone over their illness or try their luck in the government program.

If too many people apply for aid from the compensation fund ? including people with common illnesses that may, or may not, have anything to do with 9/11 toxins ? the nearly $2.8 billion set aside by Congress may get exhausted quickly. Adding just 1,000 people with cancer to the program could eat up $1 billion, said Noah Kushlefsky, an attorney with the firm Kreindler & Kreindler.

"The real question is, how many more cases are there out there?" Kushlefsky said.

Enough, it seems, to keep both the courts and the 9/11 fund administrators busy for some time yet.

Florida-Based Foreclosure Document Sweatshop Targeted Again In Another Nevada Lawsuit; Homeowners Seek Class Action Status

In Las Vegas, Nevada, CBS News reports:
  • A lawyer in Las Vegas has filed a civil lawsuit seeking class-action status on behalf of homeowners he says have been hurt by the filing of fraudulent foreclosure documents during an alleged "robo-siging" scheme.
  • Matthew Callister said he wants a state judge to stop tainted home sales and evictions and order Lender Processing Services Inc. and several bank and mortgage companies to modify loans and pay monetary damages to affected homeowners. "This is to say, 'Stop. Let us try to modify the loan appropriately,'" Callister said. "Then we'll seek damages."

***

  • The Las Vegas Sun first reported that the lawsuit alleging deceptive trade practices had been filed Tuesday in Clark County District Court on behalf of five homeowners. A hearing was not immediately scheduled.
  • Callister told The Associated Press that he had at least 20 more plaintiffs to add to the case. The civil lawsuit came days after Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto filed a civil lawsuit in Las Vegas accusing Lender Processing Services of orchestrating a massive robo-signing scheme to file fraudulent documents before the local housing market collapsed in 2008.

7 people shot dead in Texas home, motive unclear (AP)

GRAPEVINE, Texas ? Investigators believe that seven people who were found dead Christmas Day were cleaning up holiday wrapping paper when they were shot inside a suburban Fort Worth apartment, but a motive remains unclear.

All of the victims appeared to be related, and Grapevine police said they believe the shooter was among the dead. Investigators were meticulously searching the apartment, along with three vehicles parked outside, and didn't expect to finish until dawn on Monday.

"It appears they had just celebrated Christmas. They had opened their gifts," Grapevine Police Sgt. Robert Eberling said, adding that the apartment was decorated for the holiday, including a tree.

The four women and three men, aged 18 to 60, were found dead in an adjoining kitchen and living room area when police arrived midday Sunday, shortly after receiving a 911 call in which no one was on the other line, Eberling said. Two handguns were found near the bodies, he said.

None of the victims has been identified, but Eberling said it appears they all died of gunshot wounds. He said authorities still don't know what sparked the incident.

Grapevine Police Lt. Todd Dearing said investigators believe that the victims were related, though some were visiting and didn't live in the apartment. He said police are looking for other relatives to inform of the deaths.

"Seven people in one setting in Grapevine, that's never happened before. Ever," Dearing said.

Police and firefighters first rushed to the Lincoln Vineyards complex after receiving the open-ended 911 call at about 11:30 a.m., Eberling said.

"There was an open line. No one was saying anything," he explained.

So police went into the apartment, located in the middle-class neighborhood of Grapevine, not far from the upscale Fort Worth suburb of Colleyville. The apartment was at the back of the complex, overlooking the athletic fields of Colleyville Heritage High School.

But many of the nearby apartments are vacant, and police said no neighbors reported hearing anything on a quiet Christmas morning when many people were not around.

Jose Fernandez, a 35-year-old heavy equipment mechanic who moved to the complex with his family about six months ago, said he always felt safe in the area, but is now afraid to let his 10-year-old son play freely outside.

"This is really outrageous especially on Christmas," said Fernandez, who was visiting family for the holiday and returned to find several police cars parked outside his home.

"This has shocked everybody. It has scared everybody. I guess something like this can happen anywhere, but seven people dead. It's just very scary," he added.

Eberling agreed the area is fairly quiet, noting this would be the first homicide in Grapevine since 2010.

Christy Posch, a flight attendant who moved to the complex about six months ago so her son could attend the high school, said she lives a few buildings away and did not hear any gunshots.

"It's all families. That's why I moved here. No burglaries, no nothing," Posch said.

Sony plans on serving Ice Cream Sandwich to Tablets S and P

For those who have purchased Sony's Tablet S or Tablet P, we have an early Xmas present for you. The Japanese based manufacturer has announced that both tablets will be receiving Android 4.0. While the timing on either update was not? revealed, Sony did say that it has released the Software Development Kit for Tablet P.

Of the two tablets, the Sony Tablet S is the more traditional of the two with a 9.4 inch screen offering resolution of 1280 x 800. An NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core 1GHz processor is under the hood with 16GB or 32GB of native storage aboard. That total can be increased through the use of a 32GB microSD card. A 5MP camera on the back captures video at 720p at 30 fps. There is a .3MP front facing camera for self portraits and video chat. Sony has just started shipping a 3G model of this tablet, priced at 100GBP more than the Wi-Fi only model. Android 3.1 is installed. We would expect Sony to make this variant available in the States for about $100 more than the current price of $499 for the 16GB model and $599 for the 32GB unit. The 3G version is shipped with a slot for a SIM card. The Sony Tablet S was the device used by the Pope to light up the world's largest Christmas tree earlier this month.

The Tablet P has a clamshell form factor, which is certainly unusual for a tablet, and is equipped with two screens. The screens are 5.5 inches each with resolution of 1024 x 480. Powered by the same NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor that runs the Sony Tablet S, 4GB of built inb storage can be pumped up to 36GB with a microSD card. A 5MP camera is on back with the ability to take video at 720p at 30fps while the front facing camera comes in at .3MP. With Android 3.2 installed, this unique tablet has been released in the UK for 499.99GBP ($773USD) and is expected to eventually be offered by AT&T in the States in both a Wi-Fi and 4G LTE versions.

Catholic Cardinal Warns Gay Pride Parade Could 'Morph into Ku Klux Klan'

A Catholic cardinal in Chicago on Wednesday compared the gay liberation movement to the Ku Klux Klan.

Appearing on Fox's Chicago station, Cardinal Francis George complained that this year's Gay Pride Parade route would mean that Our Lady of Mount Carmel might have to cancel Sunday mass for the first time in almost 100 years.

"You don't want the gay liberation movement to morph into something like the Ku Klux Klan, demonstrating in the streets against Catholicism," George said.

"That's a little strong analogy, Ku Klux Klan," Fox Chicago's Dane Placko noted.

"It is," George agreed. "But you take a look at the rhetoric -- the rhetoric of the Ku Klux Klan, the rhetoric of some of the gay liberation people. Who is the enemy? The Catholic Church."

Upon hearing the church's concerns, parade organizers agreed to move the event start time from 10 a.m. to noon.

The parade is normally held on the last Sunday in June. The route was changed to accommodate a large crowd after more than 800,000 people attended last year's event, causing crowd control and traffic problems. A 10 a.m. start time was suggested to reduce the amount of drinking.

State Rep. Sara Feigenholtz (D) on Wednesday called for George to apologize.

"The Cardinal's unfortunate choice of words in comparing the LGBT community to the Klu Klux Klan is offensive," she told ChicagoPride.com.

The Gay Liberation Network released a statement calling George a "mendacious" man for "trying to deflect criticism of church policies that promote discrimination."

"It is ironic that George chooses to mention the KKK, as they are but one of the most extreme examples of organizations which have used religion to shield themselves from criticism of their hateful policies," the statement said. "While an overwhelming majority of lay Catholics support equality for women and LGBTs, the Catholic leadership has a history and present practice of discrimination which they apparently will go to quite extreme lengths to defend."

New Delhi: Indian Court Summons Google, Facebook and Other Websites

The Intel Hub
December 24, 2011

NEW DELHI (BNO NEWS) ? An Indian court on Friday issued a summons to social networking website Facebook, search giant Google, Yahoo!, video-sharing website YouTube and seventeen other websites to stand trial for allegedly publishing ?objectionable contents.?

New Delhi Metropolitan Magistrate Sudesh Kumar claimed that the websites contain obscene pictures and content offensive to Hindus, Muslims and Christians. The court?s order comes just three days after another court restrained these websites in a civil case from publishing any ?anti-religious? or ?anti-social? content which promotes hatred or communal disharmony.

?It is also evident that such contents are continuously, openly and freely available to everyone who is using the said network, irrespective of their age and even the persons under the age of 18 years have full and uncensored access to such obscene contents,? the court said, as quoted by the Press Trust of India (PTI).

Earlier this month, the Indian government vowed to stop what it calls ?offensive and defamatory? content on internet websites. However, several major websites immediately rejected the plan and Indian officials complained their requests fell on ?deaf ears?.

Telecommunications minister Kapil Sibal said on December 6 that the government does not want to interfere with the freedom of the press. However, he said, if the social networking websites are not willing to cooperate, then it is ?the duty of the government? to ensure ?blasphemous material? does not appear on the internet.

Social networking site Facebook, which has more than 25 million users in the country, said it would remove any content that is hateful, threatening, incites violence or contains nudity from the service. ?We recognize the government?s interest in minimizing the amount of abusive content that is available online and will continue to engage with the Indian authorities as they debate this important issue,? Facebook said in a statement earlier this month.

Google said it would abide by local laws and take any material off if it violates its policies. ?But when content is legal and does not violate our policies, we will not remove it just because it is controversial, as we believe that people?s differing views, so long as they are legal, should be respected and protected,? the company?s spokesperson said, as quoted by PTI.

India has about 100 million internet users, the third-largest number after China and the United States.

LA's 'Wonderful Life' Day honors Frank Capra film (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? George Bailey can rest easy. He really did make a difference in the lives of people, including all 3.8 million in Los Angeles.

Bailey, for the one or two people who still haven't seen the classic Frank Capra film "It's A Wonderful Life," is a man driven to the brink of suicide when he comes to believe his life never really mattered.

It's up to his quirky guardian angel Clarence to set him straight by showing Bailey, played by Jimmy Stewart, what the world would have been like without him.

In honor of the film's 65th anniversary, the City Council declared Friday "It's A Wonderful Life Day" in Los Angeles.

To get people in the spirit, Councilman Tom LaBonge, several members of Capra's family and a few others gathered at the director's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on a sunny holiday morning.

The section of the walk, it turns out, is one filled with cheesy souvenir shops and sex toy emporiums. They give it more the look of Pottersville, the disreputable place in the film that the evil banker Mr. Potter turns bucolic Bedford Falls into when Bailey isn't there to stop him.

That didn't dampen Friday's celebration, however, which included Jimmy Hawkins, the actor who played Bailey's 5-year-old son, Tommy.

As one of the last surviving cast members, the 70-year-old actor-producer said he considers it an honor to introduce new audiences to the movie.

When it debuted in theaters in 1946, "It's A Wonderful Life" was actually a commercial and critical flop. But if that bothered Capra, he never let it show.

"My father always said that `It's A Wonderful Life' was the best movie that he ever made," Tom Capra said. "As a matter of fact, he said it was the best movie ever made."

The film, whose story takes place at Christmas, became a holiday classic with the dawn of television, when families began to gather each holiday season to watch it.

It airs again Saturday night on NBC.

"It carried with it the message that you can find in each of my dad's films. The message of hope," Capra said. "Maybe like George Bailey, we should pause for a brief moment and examine our lives and see if we can make a difference as long as we never give up."

U.S. Rolls Out Tough Rules on Coal Plant Pollution

Image: Scott Butner

(Reuters) - The Obama administration on Wednesday unveiled the first-ever standards to slash mercury emissions from coal-fired plants, a move aimed at protecting public health that critics say will kill jobs as plants shut down.

Facing fierce opposition from industry groups and lawmakers from coal-intensive states, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said the benefits of the Mercury and Air Toxics Standards, or MATS, will greatly outweigh the costs.

EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson revealed the rules, which have been about 20 years in the making, at a Washington, D.C., children's hospital. Mercury can harm the nervous systems of developing fetuses and infants and can enter the food stream through contaminated fish.

"By cutting emissions that are linked to developmental disorders and respiratory illnesses like asthma, these standards represent a major victory for clean air and public health," said Jackson, whose agency hopes to start enforcing the rules over the next several years.

While the rule mostly adhered to the tough proposal on mercury, arsenic, chromium and other pollutants made earlier in the year, there were some differences.

The rules will cost utilities about $9.6 billion annually, down more than $1 billion from the EPA's earlier estimate due to "flexibilities" that were added to the final regulation, the agency said.

The EPA also said it will push permitting authorities in the states and cities to make "broadly available" a fourth year for polluters to invest in technology needed to cut the emissions.

One of a raft of clean air standards the agency is launching, the mercury standards have divided the power industry.

Companies including Exelon and NextEra that generate most of their power with "clean" fuel sources such as nuclear, natural gas and renewables have supported the mercury standards, while those that get most of their power from coal, including American Electric Power and Southern have vigorously fought them.

The standards pleased environmentalists and public health advocates, an important part of President Barack Obama's voter base, who slammed his decision in September to delay a landmark rule on smog emissions.

Driving plant closings

While the EPA stressed the flexibility of the final rules, power industry lobbyists said the agency still did not allow enough time for compliance.

Scott Segal, a lobbyist at Bracewell & Giuliani, said the rules will result in the loss of more than 1.4 million jobs by 2020 as utilities are forced to shut old coal-fired power plants. He estimated that for every temporary job created in technologies to clean up power plants four higher paying jobs, often union ones, will be lost.

"The bottom line: this rule is the most expensive air rule that EPA has ever proposed in terms of direct costs," Segal said. "It is certainly the most extensive intervention into the power market and job market that EPA has ever attempted to implement."

Rob Patrylak, a managing director of Black & Veatch, a consulting, engineering and construction company, said of all the EPA clean air rules, the MATS rule will force the largest number of coal-plant retirements. Unlike other recent clean air standards, such the Cross State Air Pollution Rule that seeks to cut emissions that move downwind from power plants, the MATS rule does not allow utilities to trade pollution credits to comply.

8 Occupy protesters arrested at Democratic HQ (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Eight Occupy Iowa protesters have been arrested at the Iowa Democratic Party headquarters in Des Moines, where they protested measures being considered in Washington dealing with issues including defense spending, a planned oil pipeline and jobless benefits.

Twelve protesters entered the party headquarters Monday morning. A few hours later, eight were escorted away by police and placed into a van. Police say they will be cited with trespassing and released.

The arrests came two days after the protesters set up camp outside President Barack Obama's campaign headquarters in Des Moines to demand he agree with them on the issues.

Protester Julie Brown says the goal wasn't to get arrested but to bring attention to defense spending, plans for an oil pipeline from Canada to Texas and other matters.

Tool detects patterns hidden in vast data sets

Friday, December 16, 2011

Researchers from Harvard University and the Broad Institute have developed a tool that can tackle large data sets in a way that no other software program can. Part of a suite of statistical tools called MINE, it can tease out multiple patterns hidden in health information from around the globe, statistics amassed from a season of major league baseball, data on the changing bacterial landscape of the gut, and much more. The researchers report their findings in a paper appearing in the December 16 issue of the journal Science.

From Facebook to physics to the global economy, the world is filled with data sets that could take a person hundreds of years to analyze by eye. Sophisticated computer programs can search these data sets with great speed, but fall short when researchers attempt to even-handedly detect different kinds of patterns in large data collections.

"There are massive data sets that we want to explore, and within them, there may be many relationships that we want to understand," said Broad Institute associate member Pardis Sabeti, senior author of the paper and an assistant professor at the Center for Systems Biology at Harvard University. "The human eye is the best way to find these relationships, but these data sets are so vast that we can't do that. This toolkit gives us a way of mining the data to look for relationships."

The researchers tested their analytical toolkit on several large data sets, including one provided by Harvard colleague Peter Turnbaugh who is interested in the trillions of microorganisms that live in the gut. Working with Turnbaugh, the research team harnessed MINE to make more than 22 million comparisons and narrowed in on a few hundred patterns of interest that had not been observed before.

"The goal of this statistic is to take data with a lot of different dimensions and many possible correlations and pick out the top ones," said Michael Mitzenmacher, a senior author of the paper and professor of computer science at Harvard University. "We view this as an exploration tool ? it can find patterns and rank them in an equitable way."

One of the tool's greatest strengths is that it can detect a wide range of patterns and characterize them according to a number of different parameters a researcher might be interested in. Other statistical tools work well for searching for a specific pattern in a large data set, but cannot score and compare different kinds of possible relationships. MINE, which stands for Maximal Information-based Nonparametric Exploration, is able to analyze a broad spectrum of patterns.

"Standard methods will see one pattern as signal and others as noise," said David Reshef, a co-first author of the paper who is currently a graduate student in the Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program and also worked on this project as a graduate student in the department of statistics at the University of Oxford. "There can potentially be a variety of different types of relationships in a given data set. What's exciting about our method is that it looks for any type of clear structure within the data, attempting to find all of them."

Not only does MINE attempt to identify any pattern within the data, but it also attempts to do so with an eye toward capturing different types of patterns equally well. "This ability to search for patterns in an equitable way offers tremendous exploratory potential in terms of searching for patterns without having to know ahead of time what to search for," said David Reshef.

MINE is especially powerful in exploring data sets with relationships that may harbor more than one important pattern. As a proof of concept, the researchers applied MINE to social, economic, health, and political data from the World Health Organization (WHO) and its partners. When they compared the relationship between household income and female obesity, they found two contrasting trends in the data. Many countries follow a parabolic rate, with obesity rates rising with income but peaking and tapering off after income reaches a certain level. But in the Pacific Islands, where female obesity is a sign of status, countries follow a steep trend, with the rate of obesity climbing as income increases.

"Many data sets will contain these types of complicated relationships that are guided by multiple drivers," said Sabeti. MINE is able to identify these. "This greatly extends our capability to find interesting relationships in data."

Researchers can use MINE to generate new ideas and connections that no one has thought to look for before.

"Our tool is a hypothesis generator," said Yakir Reshef, a co-first author of the paper and a graduate student in the Weizmann Institute of Science. "The standard paradigm is hypothesis-driven science, where you come up with a hypothesis based on your personal observations. But by exploring the data, you get ideas for hypotheses that would never have occurred to you otherwise."

In addition to testing the ability of the suite of tools to detect patterns in biological and health data, the researchers examined data collected from the 2008 baseball season.

"One question that we thought would be particularly interesting would be to see what things were most strongly associated with salary," said David Reshef. The researchers generated a list of relationships, finding that the strongest associations with salary were hits, total bases, and an aggregate statistic that reflects how many runs a player generated for a team. "Given the stakes, baseball is so well documented. We're curious to see what can be done in this realm with tools like MINE."

Researchers from many different fields, including systems biology, computer science, statistics, and mathematics, all contributed to this project. "People are getting better at combining data from different sources, and in some ways, this project is in the spirit of that," said Yakir Reshef. "The project brought together authors from many disciplines. It symbolizes the kind of collaborations that we hope people will use this for in the future."

Tiny Biocomputers Move Closer to Reality

Several research groups are developing DNA-based circuits that could one day monitor and treat disease from inside the body

Image: Illustration by Thomas Fuchs

Researchers in nanomedicine have long dreamed of an age when molecular-scale computing devices could be embedded in our bodies to monitor health and treat diseases before they progress. The advantage of such computers, which would be made of biological materials, would lie in their ability to speak the biochemical language of life.

Several research groups have recently reported progress in this field. A team at the California Institute of Technology, writing in the journal Science, made use of DNA nanostructures called seesaw gates to construct logic circuits analogous to those used in microprocessors. Just as silicon-based components use electric current to represent 1?s and 0?s, bio-based circuits use concentrations of DNA molecules in a test tube. When new DNA strands are added to the test tube as ?input,? the solution undergoes a cascade of chemical interactions to release different DNA strands as ?output.? In theory, the input could be a molecular indicator of a disease, and the output could be an appropriate therapeutic molecule. A common problem in constructing a computer in a test tube is that it is hard to control which interactions among molecules occur. The brilliance of the seesaw gate is that a particular gate responds only to particular input DNA strands.

In a subsequent Nature paper, the Caltech researchers showed off the power of their technique by building a DNA-based circuit that could play a simple memory game. A circuit with memory could, if integrated into living cells, recognize and treat complex diseases based on a series of biological clues.

This circuitry has not been integrated into living tissue, however, in part because its ability to communicate with cells is limited. Zhen Xie of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his collaborators have recently made progress on this front. As they reported in Science, they designed an RNA-based circuit that was simpler but could still distinguish modified cancer cells from noncancerous cells and, more important, trigger the cancer cells to self-destruct.

Both techniques have been used only in artificial scenarios. Yet the advances in DNA-based circuits offer a new, powerful platform to potentially realize researchers? long-held biocomputing dreams.

National Press Foundation honors Fox News' Chris Wallace (Reuters)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) ? The National Press Foundation honored Fox News' Chris Wallace for broadcast excellence and David Newhouse as editor of the year award for his oversight of the Harrisburg Patriot-News' coverage of the Penn State sexual abuse scandal.

Wallace will receive the Sol Taishoff Award for broadcast excellence, an award "given to an active broadcaster for a body of quality work in video or audio journalism," at the group's annual awards dinner March 7.

Wallace is the host of "Fox News Sunday." He started his broadcast career at NBC, where he stayed for 14 years before moving on to ABC in 1989. Wallace joined Fox in 2003, the same year Brit Hume won Fox its first award from the NPF.

Geneva Overholser, a veteran of several major newspapers and now a journalism professor, resigned from the Foundation's board in protest.

Last year's winner was NBC News' Andrea Mitchell.

Newhouse's award is named after former Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee. The NPF cited Newhouse's oversight of Penn State's sexual abuse scandal in naming him for the honor.

The newspaper, located in the Pennsylvania capital, broke the story of Jerry Sandusky's allegedly illicit activities, resulting in a criminal trial and the dismissal of legendary coach Joe Paterno.

The NPF was established in 1976. The March awards dinner will be its 29th annual such affair.

Panetta in Kabul as US ties with Pakistan erode (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan ? U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta arrived in Afghanistan Tuesday to meet with commanders, as the U.S. grapples with an eroding relationship with Pakistan that has complicated supply routes and helped fuel insurgents in the east.

While he was upbeat about security progress in Afghanistan, Panetta was also likely to hear some somber news from commanders as they wrestle with the withdrawal of 23,000 more troops in the coming year, the transition of security to Afghan forces and the near collapse of coordination with Islamabad along critical portions of the border.

His visit here is the second stop on a holiday tour that began in Africa and will also take him to Iraq, Libya and Turkey. He will be the first U.S. defense chief to visit Libya, which is emerging from an eight-month civil war. In Iraq, he will participate in a ceremony that will shut down the U.S. military mission there after nearly nine years of war.

Panetta's arrival in Kabul comes on the heels of Pakistan's decision to move air defense systems to the border with Afghanistan, part of its response to the NATO airstrikes last month that killed two dozen Pakistani forces. Pakistan has also closed two border crossings that are part of key supply routes into Afghanistan and recalled its troops from two border coordination posts.

The supply routes carry roughly 30 percent of the fuel, food and other items needed for troops in Afghanistan. While Panetta said U.S. troops in Afghanistan will get the supplies they need, the plummeting relationship with Pakistan complicates an already difficult war just as the Obama administration is trying to boast of security gains across broad swaths of the country.

"I think 2011 will make a turning point with regards to the effort in Afghanistan," Panetta told reporters traveling with him to Kabul. He cited lower levels of violence and the successful turnover of portions of the country to Afghan control. "Clearly I think Afghanistan is on a much better track in terms of our ability to eventually transition to an Afghanistan that can govern and secure itself."

Panetta said he has been reassured by Marine Gen. John Allen, the top overall commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, that military operations are continuing along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. He said Allen has reached out to Pakistani commanders to try to rebuild relations and cross-border communications that are vital in the rugged, mountainous region.

"I think it's been said a number of times," said Panetta. "Ultimately we can't win the war in Afghanistan without being able to win in our relationship with Pakistan as well."

Panetta was also likely to hear more about Allen's plans to take forces from the south, where the U.S. hopes Afghan forces can cling to security gains made in the past year, and send them to the east to try and reverse gains by insurgents who have been launching high-profile attacks in Kabul.

Allen was ordered by Obama last summer to pull out 10,000 U.S. forces by the end of this year and 23,000 more by the end of September 2012. There have been some rumblings that the administration may want to accelerate that drawdown, with an eye toward handing more control to the Afghans and shifting U.S. troops into more of an advise-and-assist role.

The battlefield decisions are also complicated by the budget showdown in Washington. The Pentagon could face as much as $1 trillion in cuts over the next 10 years if lawmakers can't come to an agreement on the budget.

For Allen, however, the most immediate challenge will be getting fuel and other supplies to the troops now that Pakistan has closed two Afghan crossings in Chaman and Torkham, in the northwest Khyber tribal area. Bringing supplies in across the northern routes is more costly and time-consuming, but officials have not said how much more money it may cost, particularly if the Pakistan crossings are closed for months.

During previous cross-border incidents, Pakistan has closed border crossings for about a week or two. This time, however, U.S. officials are worried the closings could drag on for months.

Right now, said Panetta, the troops have the supplies they need, and he said he is confident that as the U.S. continues to work with Pakistan, the other routes will be restored.

On his historic Libya trip, Panetta said the U.S. wants to help Libyans move in the right direction as the people take back their country. With military assistance from the U.S. and NATO, Libyans ousted and later killed longtime leader Moammar Gadhafi earlier this year.

Panetta's plan to visit Libya comes amid ongoing violence there, including recent clashes between revolutionary fighters and national army troops near Tripoli's airport.

Never accuse Urijah Faber of running from a bet

Urijah Faber is a busy man. In addition to running Team Alpha Male and training, he's also been spending time at the hospital as his sister recovers from a serious car accident. (He tweeted that she's alert, aware and rapidly improving.)

But even with all that on his plate, Faber still met the obligations of a bet he made with UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones. Faber bet that his teammate T.J. Dillashaw would beat John Dodson, Jones' teammate at Jackson's MMA. Dodson won the fight at Saturday's "The Ultimate Fighter" finale, so Faber paid up.

Well done, Faber.

"Nostalgia for the Light" named top doc at IDA Awards (omg!)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "Nostalgia for the Light," Chilean director Patricio Guzman's documentary that mixes celestial exploration with families searching for the remains of victims of the Pinochet regime, has been named Best Feature of 2011 by the International Documentary Association.

The award was handed out on Friday night during the IDA Awards ceremony at the Directors Guild in West Hollywood.

Typically, given a year in which there are no clear front-runners in the documentary awards race, Guzman's film did not make the shortlist in the Oscars doc category.

"Nostalgia for the Light" is, however, one of the nominees for the top prize at the Cinema Eye Honors, another major award for nonfiction films; in fact, it is the only film nominated in the marquee category at both the IDA Awards and Cinema Eye.

"Enormously moving and wondrous to behold, it looks for a peaceful equilibrium in the universe that its creator's home country may never find in itself," Andrew O'Hehir wrote at Salon.

Accepting the award with a translator at his side, Guzman left the audience with a phrase that drew a big round of applause: "A country that does not have documentary filmmaking is like a family with no photo album."

Other films nominated for the top IDA prize were "Better This World," "How to Die in Oregon," "The Redemption of General Butt Naked" and "The Tiniest Place." None made the 15-film Oscar shortlist.

The IDA's winner for Best Short was "Poster Girl," a Sara Nesson film that was nominated in the Documentary Short category at the last Oscars.

Les Blank was presented with a Career Achievement Award by director Werner Herzog, who said Blank's work was "always defining America, in a way." (Blank responded with a story about Herzog's wild-man ways while filming "Fitzcarraldo," which Blank documented in his film "Burden of Dreams.")

"Hell and Back Again" director Danfung Dennis was given the Jacqueline Donnet Emerging Filmmaker Award.

The IDA Awards were hosted by filmmakers Tiffany Schlain, Josh Fox and the IDA's president of the board, Eddie Schmidt. The show was faster-paced and more streamlined than in previous years, but with the same ramshackle, let's-put-on-a-show vibe typical of its informal and untelevised proceedings.

In other awards previously announced by the IDA, "Guanape Sur" won the David L. Wolper Student Documentary Award, "Position Among the Stars" was given the Humanitas Documentary Award, "The Pruitt-Igoe Myth" won the ABC News Videosource Award, and "The Last Mountain" took home the Pare Lorentz Award.

Television awards went to the PBS series "POV" (Best Continuing Series), and to Planet Green's series "Boomtown" (Best Limited Series).

Hezbollah blames south Lebanon blast on Israel (AP)

BEIRUT ? Hezbollah's Manar TV station has reported a blast in southern Lebanon, saying Israel remotely detonated a spying device planted in the area.

The report Friday said there were no injuries.

There was no immediate comment from Israel.

On Tuesday, rockets fired from Lebanon struck northern Israel for the first time in more than two years, drawing a burst of Israeli artillery fire across the tense border.

No casualties or major damage were reported on either side.

Israel and the Shiite militant group Hezbollah fought a monthlong war in the summer of 2006.
