She is very petite for an adult cat - so she'll fit right in to your apartment or smaller space. Oreo is healthy, spayed, and microchipped with a HomeAgain microchip.

KRAS and BRAF mutation screening in metastatic colorectal cancer costly in relation to benefits

KRAS and BRAF mutation screening in metastatic colorectal cancer costly in relation to benefits

Thursday, November 29, 2012

Researchers report that screening for KRAS and BRAF mutations can reduce the cost of anti-EGFR treatment for metastatic colorectal cancer but with a very small reduction in overall survival according to a new study published on November 28 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Metastatic colorectal cancer patients whose tumors harbor mutations in KRAS (and to a lesser extent, in BRAF) are unlikely to respond to costly anti-EGFR therapies. Screening of patients who are candidates for these therapies for mutations in one of these genes (KRAS) has been recommended, with the goal of providing treatment to those who are likely to benefit from it while avoiding unnecessary costs and harm to those who are not likely to benefit. However, the real-world impact of mutation screening for both KRAS and BRAF is unclear.

To better understand the impact of mutation screening with regard to health outcomes, costs, and value, Ajay S. Behl, Ph.D., M.B.A., of the HealthPartners Research Foundation in Bloomington, Minnesota, and colleagues, performed a cost-effectiveness analysis that took into account the treatments, resection of metastases, and survival for the different types of metastases. They conducted patient-level decision analytic simulation modeling comparing four strategies involving KRAS and BRAF mutation testing to select treatments for metastatic colorectal cancer patients: no anti-EGFR therapy (best supportive care); anti-EGFR therapy without screening; screening for KRAS mutations only (before providing anti-EGFR therapy); and screening for KRAS and BRAF mutations (before providing anti-EGFR therapy).

The researchers found that compared with no anti-EGFR therapy, screening for both KRAS and BRAF mutations showed a very high (ie, unfavorable) incremental cost-effectiveness ratio, meaning it was very costly in relation to its benefits. Compared with anti-EGFR therapy without screening, screening for KRAS mutations saved approximately $7,500 per patient; adding BRAF mutation screening saved another $1023, with little reduction in expected survival.

The authors write, "In general, our results are less supportive of the use of anti-EGFR therapy than previous analyses, and they indicate lower cost savings from KRAS testing than previously reported. Although we cannot confirm that anti-EGFR therapy is a cost-effective use of health care resources, we can affirm that KRAS testing is cost-saving. BRAF testing may offer additional savings."

In an accompanying editorial, Josh J. Carlson, M.P.H., Ph.D., of the Department of Pharmacy, University of Washington, and Scott D. Ramsey, MD, PhD, of the Division of Public Health Sciences, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, both in Seattle, note two practical points highlighted by the study: that molecular testing is as much about generating cost savings by identifying nonresponders as it is about improving survival by identifying responders, and that good modeling must account for the fact that community practice (as opposed to clinical trials) "is messy." They write, "most importantly, this study of an unusually accurate test raises important issues that should be considered for other molecular tests in other settings."

(AP Photo/Mike Munden, Columbus Dispatch, File)

(AP) ? The Ohio Supreme Court on Wednesday suspended for one year the law license of an attorney whose emails to Jim Tressel triggered an ongoing scandal and NCAA investigation that cost the football coach his job at Ohio State University.

At issue was whether Columbus attorney Christopher Cicero violated professional rules of conduct that prohibit revealing information from meetings with a client or a prospective client.

The 5-2 court decision followed the recommendation of a disciplinary board that argued Cicero wrongly discussed interviews with tattoo parlor owner Edward Rife, a potential client. However, the court overruled the board's recommendation for a six-month suspension.

Cicero sent emails to Tressel in April 2010, warning him that players were selling memorabilia or trading them for tattoos. The email traffic sparked the scandal and ended Tressel's Ohio State tenure.

An NCAA investigation also led to a bowl ban this year, reductions in scholarships and the loss of Ohio State's $389,000 share of the Big Ten bowl pot a year ago. The entire 2010 season also was vacated.

Ohio State just completed a 12-0 season and is ranked No. 4 in the AP poll.

Justice Judith Lanzinger said the case went to the heart of the importance of confidentiality between a prospective client and an attorney.

"Prospective clients trust that their confidences will be protected when they engage in an initial consultation with an attorney," Lanzinger wrote. "Cicero's almost immediate dissemination of the detailed information that Rife provided on April 15 directly violated that trust."

Justices Evelyn Lundberg Stratton and Terrence O'Donnell dissented, saying they would have imposed a six-month suspension.

"Cicero's intentions were not for personal aggrandizement or personal gain, as found by the majority, but were to alert the coach about misconduct by his players that could affect the team," Stratton wrote.

"His request that such information be held confidential does not support the notion that he was trying to seek fame," she said.

Cicero's lawyer said he was disappointed with the decision, saying he and his client had considered even a six-month suspension "a little harsh."

"We ended up losing for a year a really, really great lawyer who practices in a difficult area ? felony criminal law," said attorney John Gonzales.

He didn't know Cicero's plans for the year, adding they hadn't expected the decision so soon.

Cicero met with Rife on April 2, 2010, according to court documents, and again 13 days later to discuss whether Cicero would represent him in a federal drug trafficking case, according to a complaint against him by the Disciplinary Counsel of the Ohio Supreme Court.

Cicero, an Ohio State football player in the early 1980s, denied meeting with Rife on April 2. He said the two did meet on April 15, 2010, with the goal of confirming that Rife's partner, a former client of Cicero, wasn't involved with drug dealing or memorabilia sales.

Rife's house had been raided April 1 by federal drug investigators and Cicero wanted to know if Joseph Epling, his client and Rife's business partner, was involved in the case.

"Eddie Rife was never going to be my client in this case at all," Cicero told a three-member disciplinary panel at the Ohio Supreme Court last year. "I saw him as an ally and resource for Mr. Epling. That's how I viewed Mr. Rife's purpose in my office."

Rife pleaded guilty to drug trafficking and money laundering last year and was sentenced to three years in prison.

It was emails Cicero sent to Tressel in April 2010, warning him that players were selling memorabilia or trading them for tattoos, that helped launch the scandal.

In those emails, Cicero seemed to make it clear that he may have taken on Rife as a client.

"If he retains me, and he may, I will try to get these items back," Cicero wrote in an April 16, 2010, email.

"I have to sit tight and wait to see if he retains me, but at least he came in last night to do a face to face with me," Cicero wrote later that day.

Cicero and his attorneys argued the emails sent to Tressel were only meant to warn the coach about his players' actions and shouldn't be read as a breach of confidentiality, since ?they argued ? Rife was not a client.

Ohio's legal conduct rules generally prohibit attorneys from divulging any information they received from someone who might be a prospective client.

News of the memorabilia sales emerged in December 2010. In March 2011, the university discovered that Tressel had known about the sales since the previous April and said nothing. That was a violation of both NCAA rules and Tressel's contract, which required the prompt reporting of any knowledge of such player infractions. Tressel resigned under pressure in May 2011.

Reducing sibling rivalry in youth improves later health and well-being

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? Sibling conflict represents parents' number one concern and complaint about family life, but a new prevention program -- designed and carried out by researchers at Penn State -- demonstrates that siblings of elementary-school age can learn to get along. In doing so, they can improve their future health and well-being.

"Negative sibling relationships are strongly linked to aggressive, anti-social and delinquent behaviors, including substance use," said Mark Feinberg, research professor in the Prevention Research Center for the Promotion of Human Development. "On the other hand, positive sibling relationships are linked to all kinds of positive adjustment, including improved peer and romantic relationship quality, academic adjustment and success, and positive well being and mental health. With this program, we wanted to help siblings learn how to manage their conflicts and feel more like a team as a way to improve their well-being and avoid engaging in troublesome behaviors over time."

The researchers recruited 174 families living in both rural and urban areas to participate in the study. Each of the families had one child in the fifth grade and a second child in the second, third or fourth grade. To obtain background information about the families, the researchers collected questionnaire data from the parents, interviewed each of the siblings privately and videotaped family interactions. The team also videotaped the siblings as they planned a party together.

The team also gave a popular book on how to parent siblings to each of the families -- including those in the control and the intervention groups -- to see if the intervention would yield benefits above and beyond having access to such a parenting book.

The program -- called SIBlings Are Special (SIBS) -- was designed by Feinberg; Susan McHale, director of the Social Science Research Institute at Penn State and professor of human development; and colleagues to improve sibling and family relationships just prior to older siblings' transition to middle school, which often is marked by increased exposure to and involvement in risky behaviors. The 174 families who participated in the study were randomly assigned to take part in SIBS or to be in a control condition.

The program included a series of 12 afterschool sessions in which the researchers used games, role-playing activities, art activities and discussions to teach small groups of sibling pairs how to communicate in positive ways, how to solve problems, how to come up with win-win solutions and how to see themselves as part of a team rather than as competitors. The program also included three "family fun nights" in which the children had the opportunity to show their parents what they had been doing in the afterschool sessions.

"We found that the siblings who were exposed to the program showed more self-control and social confidence; performed better in school, according to their teachers; and showed fewer internalizing problems, such as depressive symptoms, than the siblings in the control group," said Feinberg.

Not only did the program help the siblings, it helped their parents too.

"The program helped parents use more appropriate strategies for parenting their kids," said Feinberg. "In addition, intervention mothers reported significantly fewer depressive symptoms after the program than control mothers, perhaps because their kids were doing better and they were less worried about them. No effects of the program were seen for fathers regarding depression."

The results appeared this month in the Journal of Adolescent Health.

How can the team's results be used by parents who are not involved in the study?

"We think that by encouraging siblings to feel like they're part of a team, and by giving them tools to discuss and resolve issues, parents can help their kids develop more positive relationships with each other, which can benefit everyone in the family," said Feinberg. "So, for example, if the kids are fighting over what television channel to watch or whose turn it is, we might suggest that a parent not resolve the issue for them, but instead give them just enough help so that they can calmly discuss and resolve the problem on their own. When siblings come up with their own solutions, they may be more likely to use those solutions again in the future."

Investing in more effort on the front end as a parent by helping siblings learn how to stay calm and discuss and resolve issues will pay off over time, according to Feinberg. "It's an investment in reducing your own stress and enhancing your children's well-being for the future."

The National Institute of Drug Abuse and the Children, Youth, and Family Consortium at Penn State funded this research. Other authors on the paper include Anna Solmeyer, postdoctoral scholar; Michelle Hostetler, research associate; Kari-Lyn Sakuma, research associate and curriculum development expert; Damon Jones, research assistant professor of health and human development; and co-principal investigator Susan McHale, director of the Social Science Research Institute at Penn State and professor of human development.

After One Month, MyShoebox Tops 13M Photos Stored, Averaging 3,275 Per User

MyShoebox LogoToronto-based cloud photo storage startup MyShoebox today announced a major milestone: the company has already stored and indexed 13.4 million photos from its users, in just its first month of availability, which represents more pictures than are stored in the entire Library of Congress. MyShoebox is also now storing an average of 3,275 photos per user on average, up significantly from the 2,600 it was managing for each user after its first week. Founder and CEO Steve Cosman took the stage today at Extreme Startups Demo Day, where MyShoebox was among the accelerator’s current cohort. Cosman shared his startup’s impressive early traction, which represents strong performance for a company ostensibly entering a competitive space that includes Facebook, Flickr, Dropbox and other heavy hitters. In fact, it captures 27 times more pictures than Flickr. MyShoebox offers a cloud photo storage service that goes beyond what most of those other companies provide, however, with a tool that can scan every photo on your computer (or in specific subfolders only), upload those to the cloud and make them available across devices for later viewing, complete with automatic organization options that group photos by location, the type of device they were taken with, dates and more. It also uses a clever implementation of natural language processing for easy search and filtering of your images. For free, MyShoebox offers access to 1024 max pixel width versions of all your photos from its servers. For a $5 monthly subscription, you can upgrade to a premium plan that allows access to full resolution versions of all pics stored on the service. Users signed up for the service so far are all still on free trials, since the service launched less than 30 days ago, but the payment system for the product went live two days ago, and already the company is starting to see its first revenue roll in from users. While it’s too early yet to talk about conversion rates, Cosman explained why he has high hopes that free users will turn into paying customers. “The more photos a user has in the system, the more likely they are to convert to our Pro plan,” he said. “MyShoebox was created to unify your photos across all your devices, so our product design aligns to our business. The more places you install MyShoebox, the more value you see and the more likely you are to pay for

Apple Bought Lightning From This Company - Business Insider

Apple had to purchase the "Lightning" trademark from Harley Davidson, in order to name its new tiny charger on the iPhone 5 and other iOS devices,?reports Patently Apple.

The news comes from the EU Patent & Trademark Office, which published two trademark applications for Apple's Lightning connector.

Apple doesn't own the trademark entirely though. It was approved for a partial transfer, which?Gizmodo?speculates to mean that Harley Davidson can still use the Lightning trademark for motorcycle-related products.?

Harley Davidson's previous trademark covered not only motorcycles, motorcycle electrical parts, protective helmets and turn signals but also TVs, computer game programs, and eye glasses.

Fitness Spotlight ? Reliable Personal Training Exercise Advice For A ...

The key to developing a perfect fitness training program exercise regimen is making it enjoyable, relevant to your goals and easy to do. Creating a personalized workout regimen makes working out far more pleasurable and easier to stay with. Exercising can be interesting if you plan it out correctly. Exercise can be enjoyable, and there are many ways to accomplish this. Keep the following in mind when you plan your workout regimen.

TIP! Fear is what stops you? courages is what keeps you going. -Unknown

Music is a great way of spicing up your workout routine. When you feel the beat of the music and hear the rhythms of the songs you love, you cannot help but get up and get moving. People seem wired to get up and move when they hear music, and taking advantage of that for weight loss purposes is a no-brainer. Play some music while you are working out. It is a wonderful distraction, and the beats will make you want to shake your booty.

Working out with a friend makes exercise so much more enjoyable and interesting. The time you spend exercising will speed by if you are socializing while you work out. If you exercise with someone else, the speed of your weight loss may be startling.

With a good distraction, you can give your exercise routines the illusion of sped-up time. Taking advantage of video games is one secret to making this possible. There are many types of these games. You are likely to enjoy the easy movements of a virtual bowling, baseball, or tennis game. Maybe instead of playing silly games, you would rather slug it out with a virtual boxing opponent? Regardless of which type of workout you prefer, you can easily get lost in a video game.

TIP! Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will. -Mahatma Gandhi

When buying great workout clothing, it should make you feel like an athlete and happy. Dressing for success in weight loss follows the same formula as when you are trying to get a new job. Weight loss clothing can help you feel more committed to exercising. Workout clothing can be a little more costly, but the variety of styles and colors available makes it worthwhile and can really add to the fun factor in your workout routines.

Doing the same exercises every day leads to boredom, and it is easy to get discouraged. It?s a necessity to switch things up. If you enjoy going on the treadmill, you might want to consider running outdoors for a change of pace. Switching up your fitness routine gives you the motivation to keep on exercising.

Do not be afraid to pat yourself on the back, you deserve it. After you have attained your first goal, you will probably feel motivated to reach even higher! Buy yourself something nice, say a fitness workout equipment. It will be life long companion.

TIP! Fear is what stops you? courages is what keeps you going. -Unknown

Air raid kills 10 children near Damascus: activists

AMMAN (Reuters) - A Syrian government air strike on a rebel-held village near Damascus killed 10 children on Sunday as they played outdoors, opposition activists said, and video footage showed residents collecting young bodies torn by shrapnel.

The children went out after a lull in fighting in Deir al-Asafir, a village 12 km (8 miles) east of Damascus, when fighter jets struck, activists and residents said.

Video footage taken by activists showed the bodies of two young girls, one wearing purple, the other red, on the street in the village, with wounds to their neck and head. A sobbing woman picked up one of the girls up and hugged her lifeless body.

Another two dead boys, hit in the head and face, were shown on the backseat of a car. Men picked up the bodies of two other children while a larger body lay next to the front wheel of a vehicle.

"None of those killed were older than 15 years old. There are two women among 15 people wounded, mostly hit as they were inside the courtyards of their houses," said Abu Kassem, an activist in the village told Reuters.

"There were no fighters inside Deir al-Asafir when the bombing occurred. They operate on the outskirts. This was indiscriminate bombing," he said.

Abu Kassem said the munitions dropped by the fighter jets were cluster bombs. Other footage showed a row of what appeared to be unexploded small bombs.

"We collected 70 of these so far," one man said.

Syria has barred most reporters from the country making it hard to verify the report.

Syrian authorities made no comment on the report, but official media have said the army has been on the offensive to "cleanse" the area of what the government calles as terrorists.

Earlier this month, the U.N. political affairs chief told the Security Council of credible reports that the Syrian military has used cluster bombs in fighting the 20-month revolt against President Bashar al-Assad's autocratic rule.

The Syrian army has denied a Human Rights Watch report issued in October that Assad's forces have used cluster bombs, saying it did not possess such weapons.

Cluster bombs are banned under a 2010 U.N. treaty, though Syria, like Israel, Russia and the United States have not signed the pact.

Little Falls mourns teen cousin shooting victims

(AP) ? A Little Falls man faces arraignment Monday in the shooting deaths of a pair of teenage cousins who went missing Thanksgiving Day and whose bodies were found by police the next day in the basement of the man's central Minnesota home.

Little Falls school officials identified the victims as cousins Haile Kifer, 18, and Nicholas Brady, 17.

Police on Sunday were holding Byron David Smith, 64, of Little Falls, who they expected will be charged Monday with second-degree murder.

Smith told police he shot the two during a break-in, but authorities have said his actions exceeded a reasonable self-defense.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported that about 200 people gathered Sunday night for a vigil at Little Falls High School for Kifer and Brady. Mourners remembered both as athletic and friendly.

The newspaper also interviewed Bruce Smith, the suspect's brother, who said several break-ins had left his brother feeling vulnerable and afraid.

Family members of Kifer and Brady could not immediately be reached for comment.

Details about the shooting remained murky Sunday. Morrison County deputies visited Byron David Smith's home just north of Little Falls on Friday afternoon on a suspicious activity call, at which point, they say, he immediately confessed to shooting two people the previous day around noon. Deputies found the bodies in the basement.

Smith's brother told the Star-Tribune on Sunday that his brother was upset after the shootings and unsure how to react.

"Put yourself in his shoes after you shoot two people in your basement," Bruce Smith said. "How are you going to react?"

Morrison County Sheriff Michel Wetzel said Sunday that Byron David Smith claimed the teenagers broke into his home. But Wetzel said circumstances at the scene led investigators, including some from the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, to believe that his actions were in excess of simple self-defense.

Wetzel refused to release further details, including whether investigators believe that Smith shot the teenagers immediately upon finding them. Wetzel planned to hold a news conference Monday in Little Falls, where he said he would release a fuller picture of what happened.

"We do want to give the public a clear picture of what happened," Wetzel said. He said investigators were still actively working the case.

Kifer was a senior at Little Falls High School. Superintendent Stephen Jones said she competed in gymnastics and swimming and helped manage the boys wrestling team. Brady had attended the same school up through the previous school year, at which point he transferred to nearby Pillager High School.

Jones said the Morrison County Sheriff's Department notified him of the identity of the victims. Little Falls students have a scheduled day off Monday, but Jones said grief counselors will be on hand anyway, and students and their parents will be invited to come to school and talk about what happened. He said more counselors will be in place on Tuesday when all students return; Pillager High School also planned to have counselors available.

Jones said Brady had wrestled for Little Falls before transferring schools. "These were both friends to a lot of folks, involved in lots of activities and working their way towards graduation like so many other kids, trying to put their focus on the future," Jones said.

Few details were immediately available about Smith, whose home is in a secluded area north of Little Falls and near the Mississippi River. Wetzel said he was not previously known to the sheriff's department as a troublemaker, and his name doesn't turn up any previous convictions in a state criminal history database. The Star Tribune quoted a neighbor, John Lange, who said Smith was a retired security worker and volunteer Scout leader who cared for his elderly mother until her recent death.

"He's a really decent guy. I think he just snapped," Lange told the newspaper.

A Facebook page set up to mourn Kifer and Brady was getting heavy traffic on Sunday afternoon. Fellow students and alumni from Little Falls High School were planning a Sunday night candlelight vigil at the high school football field.

Marketing With Email: How To Use It To Make More ... - Businesses

Marketing is an essential component to any successful business, but some companies fail to capitalize on all of the marketing tools available to increase profits. One very effective marketing tool that can be neglected is a well-designed e-mail marketing campaign. This article contains some tips and advice to help you better utilize the power of email to market your business.

Branding your business is essential, and it should be incorporated in your e-mail marketing endeavors, as well. Because of this, you should design a template which lets you incorporate the company colors, logo, and other special fonts that are on your site. This will allow your emails to be recognized instantly.

Be ethical, and send your marketing emails only to those who have provided their permission for you to contact them this way. Sending messages to individuals who are not interested will cause them to block your emails. If several people report your emails as spam, your email provider may suspend or close your account for violating the terms of service.

TIP! After a customer makes a purchase, offer them a coupon good on their next visit in your thank you email. Use a link they can click on to see what the offer is.

Mix up the format of your emails every once in awhile to keep things interesting. HTML is not the only way to convey your message, and an occasional plain text email can grab your customers attention. If you use well-written text, this type of a message can have an intimate feel, which will often make your customers view you in a more personal and trusting way.

Closely monitor the marketing with email campaigns of competitors. This can be done simply by becoming a subscriber to their email list. You should study their techniques and do your best to develop better campaigns. Always try to find areas in which they are not meeting the needs of their customers, so you can try to fulfill those needs. If they have promotions going on, create better promotions than theirs.

Marketing your products successfully becomes easier with an effective email marketing plan. By getting in touch with your customers in a personal way like email, you strengthen the bond between them and your business. Watch your income increase by applying the tips in the above article.

TIP! Double, triple and even quadruple check your emails before you press send. Many people forget this step, which is unfortunate.

Comfortable Clothing To Wear On Thanksgiving 2012 (PHOTOS)

It's the most wonderful time of the year. Families and friends gather, and of course, you get to have an amazing meal usually made up of turkey, stuffing, gravy, green beans and pumpkin pie. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Thanksgiving is upon us. But with all the festivities going on, it's easy to forget one of the most crucial parts of this holiday: Your ensemble.

We're not saying that Thanksgiving is a time to try out the latest runway looks, rather it's a time to experiment with Lycra, elastic waistbands and oversized sweaters. Nothing is worse than feeling uncomfortable in a bandage dress while you're helping yourself to another serving of yams. So, plan ahead and make sure your outfit is as comfortable and practical as possible.

The more forgiving, the better is always a nice motto to adopt around the holiday season. Why not try an oversized flannel -- it'll hide your full belly and it's super cozy to curl up in after you've stuffed your face. Yoga pants are also totally acceptable. Let's face it, Thanksgiving dinner is kind of like going to the gym, a lot of stamina is required for both. If your family likes to get more dressed up, slip on a sweater dress (remember, a babydoll cut is your friend). This Thursday might also be a good time to try out the cape trend (nothing says pass the pie like wearing a loose blanket to dinner). And ladies, for the love of God, leave the skinny jeans at home. No one wants to muffin top out of their jeans while they're reaching for that cranberry muffin.

So what are you planning on wearing to the turkey fest this year? Add your photo below!

Eating right key to survival of whales and dolphins

Thursday, November 22, 2012

In the marine world, high-energy prey make for high-energy predators. And to survive, such marine predators need to sustain the right kind of high-energy diet. Not just any prey will do, suggests a new study by researchers from the University of British Columbia and University of La Rochelle, in France.

Published today in the online journal PLOS ONE, the study is the first to show that the survival of whales and dolphins depends on the quality of their diets and this plays an important role in conservation.

"The conventional wisdom is that marine mammals can eat anything," says co-author Andrew Trites, a marine mammal expert at UBC. "However, we found that some species of whales and dolphins require calorie rich diets to survive while others are built to live off low quality prey?and it has nothing to do with how big they are."

The team compared the diets of 11 species of whales, dolphins and porpoises in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean, and found differences in the qualities of prey consumed that could not be explained by the different body sizes of the predators. The key to understanding the differences in their diets was to look at their muscle performance.

"High energy prey tend to be more mobile, and require their predators to spend more energy to catch them," says Trites. "The two have co-evolved."

J?r?me Spitz, the study's first author, says the research will help better assess the impact of resource changes to marine mammals.

"Species with high energy needs are more sensitive to depletion of their primary prey," says Spitz, a post-doctoral fellow at ULR in France, who completed the research while a visiting scholar at UBC. "It is no longer a question of how much food do whales and dolphins need, but whether they are able to get the right kinds of food to survive."

A New Home for the Holiday | emptywheel

Marcy is probably up to her eyeballs in boxes both empty and full right now. I picture McCaffrey the MilleniaLab wandering lost if excited among them, wearing a loose doggy grin as his nails tick-tack across the new floor. Mr. Emptywheel may likewise be wandering between boxes while muttering in an Irish accent under his breath about a well-deserved beer.

Ah, but they?re home for the holiday. What a great memory this will be in years to come. Congrats to Mr. and Mrs. Emptywheel on their new digs!

Most of us have memories of home on this holiday?many good, some bad, but enough decent ones to compel us to go home to give thanks with others. Many of you are preparing for a harried road trip, or an even more hectic trip by air. I wish you safe and secure between here and wherever it is you need to be. Watch out for deer if you?re driving.

A number of my own best/worst Thanksgiving memories involve travel. Like the time I flew from Detroit to Omaha to see my folks and kid brother; it was like landing in another world, a movie set replete with All-American high school football stars and cheerleaders. We drove from the airport past the Platte River, where sandhill cranes amassed by the thousands along the banks in nearby fields. I made my dad stop the car to hear the roar they made as these dinosaur-ish creatures chattered at one another.

Or another year when I drove hundreds of miles to volunteer with my nurse-mom at a convent. Well, more like a nursing home for nuns; I helped with bedpans, walkers, visited and served dinner, attended an utterly silent prayer service. Absolutely insane experience, all the elderly women patting me on the cheek like I was the one who needed care. I will never forget the tiny, frail 80-something sister who sat next to me during their turkey dinner; she clutched my hand, then patted it, and rasped, ?This?ll be one Thanksgiving you?ll never forget.? She fricking winked at me and smirked, and then tried to recruit me to take vows in their order.

Hell yes, sister, I still think of it and you every year. Sorry about those vows, though. I know you meant well. I?ve never been nun material.

When I was growing up, nearly every T-Day holiday my family took in a new movie. We don?t do that anymore, but we do watch oldies but goodies at home. They?ve become part the rituals that my kids will remember in the future as they think back on their Thanksgiving holidays past. Like watching my personal favorite, Home for the Holidays, while we bake something yeasty for tomorrow?s feast at the in-laws. There?s nothing quite like Home for the Holidays to brace one?s self for visiting the extended dysfunction that is family. Tomorrow we?ll watch Planes, Trains, and Automobiles while we cuddle up on our couch, lolling about in our overfed discomfort, and enjoy a fire in the fireplace.

What about you? What are your favorite Thanksgiving Day memories? Are you traveling? And what about holiday movies?is there one you?d share or enjoy every year?

Lawsuit against Madonna dismissed in Russia

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) ? A Russian court on Thursday dismissed a lawsuit that sought millions of dollars in damages from Madonna for allegedly traumatizing minors by speaking up for gay rights during a concert in St. Petersburg.

The ruling came after a one-day hearing that bordered on the farcical. During it, plaintiffs claimed that Madonna's so-called "propaganda of perversion" would negatively affect Russia's birthrate and erode the nation's defense capability by depriving the country of future soldiers. At one point, the judge threatened to expel journalists from the courtroom if they laughed too much.

In the end, the Moskovsky district court in St. Petersburg threw out the Trade Union of Russian Citizens' lawsuit and the 333 million rubles ($10.7 million) it sought from the singer for allegedly exposing youths to "homosexual propaganda."

Madonna did not attend the trial, and her publicist Liz Rosenberg said Thursday the star wouldn't comment about it.

Anti-gay sentiment is strong in Russia, particularly in St. Petersburg, where local legislators passed a law in February that made it illegal to promote homosexuality to minors. Six months later, Madonna criticized the law on Facebook, then stood up for gay rights during a concert in St. Petersburg that drew fans as young as 12.

"Who will children grow up to be if they hear about the equal rights of the lesbian lobby and manly love with traditional sexual relations?" one of the plaintiffs, Darya Dedova, testified Thursday. "The death rate prevails over the birth rate in the West; young guys are becoming gender neutral."

The plaintiffs submitted evidence about gay culture drawn from Wikipedia pages, claiming that a real encyclopedia could not have articles about homosexuality.

"We aren't against homosexual people, but we are against the propaganda of perversion among minors," Dedova told the court. "We want to defend the values of a traditional family, which are currently in crisis in this country. Madonna violated our laws and she should be punished."

Madonna, who performed in Moscow and St. Petersburg in August as part of her world tour, also angered Russian officials by supporting jailed members of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot. The American said during her Moscow concert that she would "pray for them," then turned around so the audience could see the words "Pussy Riot" written on her back. The singer also donned a ski mask similar to those worn by Pussy Riot.

Despite international outrage, three of that band's members were sentenced to two years in jail on hooliganism charges for performing a "punk prayer" at Moscow's main cathedral, during which they pleaded with the Virgin Mary to deliver Russia from President Vladimir Putin. One of the Pussy Riot members was later released from jail on appeal, but the other two were sent to prison camps to serve their sentences.

Seddon reported from Moscow.

Since I am pretty much a noob and have been doing a lot of research on here as well as other sites. I seem to come across anwers that seem to be conflicting to the same topic. Is the a definitve answer for any of these? And if some else has run across the same thing with other topics please feel free to add to the list.

Thanks to all ahead of time for your input.

1. Speakers have a break-in period.

2. Your amp should provide twice the power than your speaker are rated to handle in order to best drive the speakers (provide overhead and prevent amp clipping).

3. Your speakers should be rated to handle significantly more power than your amp can provide in order to ensure the speaker does not create distortion.

4. A round speaker will provide better quality of sound versus an oval speaker (eg. 6.5 vs. a 6x9).

5. As you pay a higher price for your component sets or separates the sound quality will be infinitely greater as will the construction of the speaker (eg. $1,000+ >$600 > $300).

6. ???

You do realize the forum has a myth?s section, don?t you?

The jury is out on this one. While I have measured T/S Parameter differences between an out of the box subwoofer and that same subwoofer played in free air for 8 hours straight at a particular test tone, I can?t say that the T/S Parameters changed enough to provide an audible difference.
Actually, if you want to prevent amplifier clipping, you?d need a minimum of 10x the RMS power!

Also, what about your head unit clipping at the outputs? Or your external processor? Or the pre-amp section of your amplifier? You need to look at the point where you are trying to prevent clipping.

Now with that said, you can have all the power in the world, and you will still run into the negative aspects of power compression.

Sadly, a moving driver has an inherent amount of distortion. That?s just the way the ball bounces. I now laugh at how I used to get hung up on the distortion figures of amplifiers being 1%, .1%, .01%, .05%, and so on? Why? Because on average, most speakers reproduce music with double digit distortion figures due to their mechanical nature of reproducing sound. 5% to 10% is not uncommon in the automotive environment. Some people even have their subs producing 20% to 30% distortion.A properly designed speaker in the proper environment should sound relatively the same, regardless of its shape. The brand escapes me right now, but I know for certain there is at least one audiophile grade, home audio speaker set that uses oval woofers.Once you get to a certain price point, you reach the law of diminishing returns. Basically, you can double the cost of a particular product, and may receive a marginal improvement in sound. I'm talking something low, like 5% better versus OMFG, am I ever blown away by the quality. Conversely, I?ve been known to spend double the money and end up less satisfied than I was before.

Usually the more expensive speakers are made out of exotic materials that will contain: Kevlar, carbon fiber, some weird treated paper, an exotic basket material, rare earth magnets, etc.

With that written, you also have some grossly overpriced component sets out there that are marked at nearly $1,000 a set and contain less than $200 of raw components.

Is your mind blown yet?

The audio plot thickens!

Ever thought about an amplifier distortion in relation to a speakers distortion, as in synergistic effects or an amplifiers distortion exacerbating a speakers distortion?

You do realize the forum has a myth?s section, don?t you?

Found it right after I posted . Anyhow this could be moved there and I wouldn't mind. I thought it would be nice to have all the major issues that a newbie runs into definitevly answered.

Like this one:

Oval speakers will typically distort at higher power faster than the equivilent round version? So if my objective is to get clear sound at say 115dbs in my car for the rock music I listen to, which speaker design do I go with? Factory has 6.5's in the doors but can fit a 6x9....oh what to do? That never ending question on the quest for the unattainable match of concert level volumes of rock music in my car with the clarity of jazz music.

1. Speakers have a break-in period. TRUE...Specifically Subs!

2. Your amp should provide twice the power than your speaker are rated to handle in order to best drive the speakers (provide overhead and prevent amp clipping). FALSE ... Amp design takes presidence. Too many amp manufacturers exaggerate their specs.

3. Your speakers should be rated to handle significantly more power than your amp can provide in order to ensure the speaker does not create distortion. FALSE/TRUE ... more of a crossover issue! Some speakers crave for more power than their stated max. Ex: I have 300 watts feeding my Rainbow Reference Mid-bass from my Audison Trenta.

4. A round speaker will provide better quality of sound versus an oval speaker (eg. 6.5 vs. a 6x9). Don't know...I never tried a 6x9...but I remember my brothers car about 30 years had a 6x9.

5. As you pay a higher price for your component sets or separates the sound quality will be infinitely greater as will the construction of the speaker (eg. $1,000+ >$600 > $300). FALSE ... Marketing is a glorified lies.

6. ??? No idea!

If pristine sound is what you want in the vehicle, give up now while you have a chance. I spent the better part of two years trying to attain the best possible sound I could in the vehicle, only to realize that a properly set up home system will EASILY outperform the car system at the fraction of the cost.

Let me tell you what I discovered...

1. The speakers in the vehicle are not placed in equidistant positions from the listener. This is much easier to achieve in the home, and while time alignment will partially get you there in the car, that time alignment in and of itself causes other issues.

2. The environment is mobile and subject to a multitude of problems from that alone. How are you going to deal with the reflections from the glass and the hard surfaces? What about extraneous variables such as other vehicles, tire noise, road noise, rain, wind, etc.? All of that will impact your pristine sound no matter how much time, money, and effort you put into reducing the extraneous noise variables.

3. The power source is 12 volts DC and your amplifier power is limited to what your battery can store and what your alternator can supply. In other words, lots of luck maintaining 115 decibels average (which is pretty loud) off a single battery and a factory alternator.

The bottom line is that car audio is a compromise, and you have to decide what deficiencies you are willing to accept prior to delving into it. If you don't, you could end up spending lots of money and time swapping gear, only to find that it was all a waste to begin with.

My last warning to you is to beware of the power of marketing! You'd be amazed at what you will hear based on what you believe from a preconceived notion.

I think it's all in what we have become accustomed to whether it's more or less accurate reproduction. Kind of the reason Velodyne quit making their servo subs. Rep told me people didn't like them cause they were too accurate, didn't like the sound of an accurate sub as they were use to listening to distortion and became accustomed to it.. lol. So your statement makes perfect sense.

Great advice as aside from becoming more knowledgable from this site I find I am wasting valuable time trying to attain the unattainable. SQ and Rock Music does not seem to go together. No one has the definitive answer but at least some definitive answers have been gathered in this post on a few issues I feel newbies like myself are encountering.

Thanks to all for the posts and anything else that you feel needs to be added.

I think that if you can get away from this SQ obsession that people seem to have and concern yourself with what is fun to listen to with YOUR music, you'll be much happier. I don't care what Diana Krall sounds like on a system because I listen to Nile. I only care that Nile sounds the best it possibly can. Don't demo a system or judge your system with jazz if you don't listen to jazz. There's my advice.

Wow, what kind of setup do you have in the car that is able to keep that sounding good at high ear deafening volume levels? Cuz I know you are not just driving around listening to it at normal conversation levels or less. I have to imagine the CD sounds so much better than the YouTube clip (musically speaking). But yeah, that and Tool, and stuff like Black Label Society is what I want to be rockin'. When I listen to music like this I like to "feel" the music on me (kind of like being at the show) and not just the drums either.
