Commentary: Obama's Call for Manufacturing's Return is Key

President Barack Obama touched on a variety of issues-- energy, jobs, technology, climate change and the middle class-- in his State of the Union address on Tuesday. Yahoo News asked voters to respond to his speech. Here's one perspective.

COMMENTARY | President Barack Obama gave the first State of the Union address in his second term as president, taking the opportunity to discuss his intended direction in improving the economic standing of the United States and to avoid the sequester. If an agreement cannot be made by March 1st,, there will be a number of deep cuts to federal spending across many services automatically taking effect. To avoid this, Obama will have to work with the Republicans in Congress on many issues which they have not been able to.

While stating that $2.5 trillion have been reduced from the national deficit, we are only halfway to goals, which were set in budget reduction. His suggestion to meet these goals rely on reducing tax loopholes to special interests, and maintaining funding towards schools. The tax reforms he called for are a tough compromise for both parties, and would require a lot of work from both sides of the political fence.

He called on the country to "reignite the true engine of America's economic growth-- a rising, thriving middle class." He noted that while corporate profits continue to rise, the minimum wage has remained stagnant over the past decade. His agenda includes the American Jobs Act, which aims to assist job growth without increasing the federal budget, and bringing many modern manufacturing jobs to the United States. This change would be greatly welcomed in my home city, Newport, R.I., where unemployment remains around 10 percent.
