PILGRIM are a little known local treasure. Essentially the brain child of NCN lecturer Dmitry Fedotov, the band have been honing their skills over two years to create a musical collaboration of performers and technicians.
Saturday's 90 minute show at the Rescue Rooms was the unveiling of their new album Dawn Chorus and if you like your rock cut from the "classic" cloth, then it?s worth a listen.
They channel the old masters; Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Free, creating songs with brooding atmosphere.
Fedotov's solos are borderline virtuoso, the rhythm section is designed for grooving and Phil Tietjen's vocals are like velvet dragged through gravel.

After the first couple of uplifting numbers things went a bit "Sabbathy" as the band showcased their darker side but they soon upped the energy with the stomping groove of Rebel Fortress.
The audience, a mix of men of a certain age and their younger rivals, lapped it all up.
Pilgrim clearly knew what kind of music they wanted to make and never claimed to reinvent the wheel, but at times the influences of the past seemed to overwhelm any new inspiration. Still, if it ain't broke why fix it? The audience enjoyed it, and the band should be proud of what they've created.
